Fox and Universal has licensed a number of classic titles to Criterion. Spartacus and Young Mr. Lincoln are two such films, that come to mind, that the Studio or Distributor released themselves even after the Criterion release. Spartacus was first released by Universal before Criterion, but then released SD last year, along with the HD version, and last year's Ford at Fox included the Criterion labeled version of Young Mr. Lincoln. My question is: will Fox itself release some of the film noir titles that Criterion has and will Universal distribute some of the 1930s Paramount titles it has, such as Trouble In Paradise or it's own 1940's The Killers and Naked City?

Re: Criterian Release of Studio Titles
I have a question as to how long this licensing extends to in the case of Fox to Criterion? I would love to see Criterion bring out (finally) CLUNY BROWN since they did bring out HEAVEN CAN WAIT a couple of years ago. And Eclipse is releasing four Lubitsch musicals owned by Universal this week. Universal also brought out SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS and THE LADY EVE after two excellent Criterion special editions. I am curious that I read the other day on a forum site that Eclipse is bringing out 4 von Sternberg silents. That would require mixing Paramount-controlled prints with Universal-MCA controlled prints. That would be a first, although some of the Kubrick and Stone sets mixed and matched with contemporary films.

Re: Criterian Release of Studio Titles
All of the Paramount von Sternberg silents are still owned by Paramount. Only 3 are extant: UNDERWORLD, LAST COMMAND, and DOCKS OF NEW YORK. A 3-minute fragment of CASE OF LENA SMITH was found in China a few years ago; it would be wonderful to see this included, but I haven't heard anything to that effect.Universal owns the sound films, produced originally by Paramount, beginning with THUNDERBOLT (1929).
