Looking for a new receiver

Hey folks

I'm going to be moving in a few months and building a HT area in the new place. The system I have now is 8+ years old and there's a lot of new goodies these days. I'm going to be replacing almost every component I have and starting from scratch. I plan to go with a plasma tv, around 50". I was wondering if anyone knows of any good receivers to look into that can do all of my component & video switching through just 1 HDMI connection to the TV? I will have a variety of different video and audio sources, like for instance my Wii will connect with RCA audio and component video, my HD DVD/Blue Ray will connect with HDMI I guess.. I basically want the receiver to do all the switching so I don't have to have multiple cables going to the TV, just the 1 big HDMI cable.

I'm looking for something that can not only do that switching but something that can "upconvert" or "deinterlace" or whatever it's called, so that even the 480i sources will still look good And of course for the HD sources I'd like it to look as perfect as possible. Any recommendations on what to look for and what I can expect to spend? I'm pretty much limited to Best Buy or Circuit City, though there's a Tweeter I can hike to. My current receiver is a Yamaha and I had no problems with it so I would be fine with getting another Yamaha unless there's something better for the same amt of cash. And last I would like a 7.1 receiver instead of 5.1. So, any ideas?

What speakers do you have anyway?

Budget? Well I'm going to have to recommend Onkyo TX-SR605 anyway.

Re: Looking for a new receiver

Currently, I have a JBL N-Center and 4 N-24's, and a generic old Sony sub.

When I build the new area I hope to invest in some nicer speakers. The JBLs were fine though, but I dropped one once and it buzzes sometimes now So I want something a little better and I'll salvage what I can for a regular stereo system in another room.

For looks, I hope to go for some floor speakers for the fronts. Wall speakers for the sides and a set of in-wall speakers in the celling above the sofa. Or possibly in-wall for all surrounds. I was looking around at Tweeter, I think I'd spend around 1000-1500 on speakers. I'd like to go less but the floor speakers are pricey the Polk speakers they had all sounded good and were closer to my price range. They had some that were like $4000 each. yeeesh.

and the receiver I'd like to keep around $1000 or less if possible. I was looking at Yamaha's site and they seemed to have a few that are over $1000 that have all the bells & whistles, but if a cheaper one can do it that would be great. I don't need to plug my ipod into it or listen to satelite radio. I just want really good sound and video switching that will give me a good picture on a great big TV.

Altogether I'll have about $10,000 to spend on the HT room, including cables and furniture and everything. I will probably end up buying from Best Buy though, as I can get some discounts and cash back with my reward zone card

Re: Looking for a new receiver

I'd look into the Denon 2808CI which could easily be had for under $1000 (MSRP is $1199).
