Please stop me and tell me I'm crazy!

In the past few years I have run the gammit of HDTV's.
Most recently I purchased a Pioneer PDP-5080 and well, it is spectacular.
Aided by a fellow enthusiast I have even calibrated the grayscale myself.
Not perfectly but it is now extremely close to 6500k.
My problem arises from here.
I have two dead pixels on it now and it is only a few weeks old, so I can still return it or exchange it at BB.
This t.v. simply has the best picture I've ever seen....BUT, I am used to bigger displays.(heck for awhile I had a Marantz PJ @ 110")

So when the realization came that I would need to exchange my 5080 for another due to the pixels, I started pondering an oversized DLP.
I've had two in the past, the Samsung HLS5087W and Toshiba HM167. I loved the first and hated the second.(comparatively speaking)

So basically once I went from 50" to 65" to 110", going back to 50" seems kinda small.

Considering the Mitsu's 65734 and 65833(outside looking in Sony 60A3000, Samsung 6176, Samsung 6187)

....so I am wondering if you guys think I'm crazy for even considering this move?

Re: Please stop me and tell me I'm crazy!

greetings

Bigger is more enveloping ... draws you into the movie.

The Pioneer is nice, but small enough that it does not draw you in. It's a TV. cruel as saying that might be.

Unless you want to get used to sitting with a 40 deg view angle on the pioneer ... the projection image will be preferable.

YMMV ...

Michael....hello and thank you for your quick response.
Two quick questions for you if you have time?
1. What do you mean get used to watching the Pioneer at 40 degrees?
2. What size do you think does draw you in? In other words since I'm going bigger should I only go for the 65"-'ers?
3. What current DLP's would you recc. to look at?

So does anyone else have any opinions or reccomendations?

Re: Please stop me and tell me I'm crazy!

Greetings

If you figure that your field of vision is 180 degrees ... (you can't see behind you) ...

the screen needs to cover 40 degrees of your view ... similar to the middle of the theater.

Or conversely ... need to sit 1 to 3 times screen height to take advantage of the HD resolution.

Draw you in ... different for everyone. I went from a 56" at 8 feet to 102" at 12 feet and I wasn't interested in looking at the 56" image anymore ... no matter how well calibrated it was.

Also consider ... if you have big sound ... but small image ... things do not seem right.

Likely look at Samsung ... all that is left ... Mits ... but Samsung more tweakable on RP level.

Thanks, would you recc. the lamp based or led based?

At the moment, the lamp based ones can be calibrated to better end results. The LED ones are not bad ... per se ... just not as good as the lamp ones. (yet)

Re: Please stop me and tell me I'm crazy!

I will take my projector's 480p picture whose width can be measured in feet over a 50-65" Tv that looks better than real life any day. That should give you an idea of what I think of size vs resolution

Re: Please stop me and tell me I'm crazy!

Leaning towards the newer LED 6187.(wish they had a 67" out now like the one coming in a couple months--but I need a set now as I don't even have a crt I could, even if I wanted to, watch) The newer lamp based 6176's have way too many reported problems with excessive bowing. A little bowing fine, but not where it is smiling or frowning at you.
Also, I can log alot of hours on my t.v. and don't want to replace the lamp at ~2K hours.(which seems to be the end user average)
That would be ~7/8 months.
Also, I realized with my PJ and reef tanks just how much lamps do not like to be refired too often and that is a definite habit of mine.
So I have decided to pass on the mitsu's as well.

So for me, it seems the led 6187 is the right fit. As long as the viewing angles are not too severe in my home.

But how far do you sit though? That matters afterall. If you can't stand sitting 8-10ft from the display and must sit more like >=15ft away, all the extra resolution on the smaller displays will get wasted anyway...

Re: Please stop me and tell me I'm crazy!

I plan to sit ~8.5' away from screen.
I'm a little concerned after going to take a good look at the Samsung HL-T6187S. Its' vertical viewing angle is not very good at all.(could have something to do with bright showroom exagerating it)
Also when you do move vertically the colors seem to change, not just get dimmer or brighter??
