Consolidated HD Bargain Thread! - Page 46

^ Yeah, they've been "clearing out" the trilogy set in Canada at very low prices (low for North America...); I forget how much, but in the mid-$30s...about a tenner more than from the UK. Now I know why.

The UK "Ultimate Bourne" set looks like it should cost under $30 shipped from Amazon.co.uk as of this morning's exchange rate.  And the reviews there say it plays on U.S. equipment, despite the "Region 2" notation in the spec list. I think I would lean towards getting that one, even though there is (in my opinion) something to be said for flipper discs.

Joe

The only question would be whether any of the extras are standard definition PAL, which sometimes happens with Region 2 Blu-ray.

I cannot speak about the extras, since I have never watched them from my copies, but the films themselves of the U.K. version of The Bourne Trilogy play with no issues on Region A players. It's hard to beat the price via Amazon.uk. Personally, I would not have upgraded from SD-DVD at the price being charged for the U.S. release.

I'm even less inclined to upgrade, since I have serviceable HD DVD versions and two working players.

I can confirm that the Bourne Trilogy UK version plays on Region A. I had no problem playing the movies or the extras. I was using a Oppo BD-83.

Got it from Amazon UK about 2 months ago for about $27 total with shipping.

The same review noted that the extras are in 480i, also playable on U.S. players.

Good enough for me.

One thing of note for bargain hunters importing from Amazon UK.  I just got slapped w/ custom charges for my recent big order that was shipped using UPS -- UPS sent me a bill for it w/ some UPS customs brokerage fee (of ~$6, that essentially doubled the charges) tacked on top.  My previous order shipped using DHL did not have this, but that was a smaller order, so I don't know if that matters.  Also, I didn't use Amazon's own currency exchange service to pay this time and don't know if that somehow made a diff on this.

Anyway, just a heads up warning for y'all.  The fee total came out to ~$12 for my order of ~$220 (before shipping costs).  The import duty itself (of ~$6) wasn't bad at all, but the UPS customs brokerage fee (of ~$6) tacked on top seems like a bit of a ripoff to me.

Apparently it does because I've been getting imported software from Amazon for years and have never paid such custom charges.

Right there with you.  I'll admit I was a little tempted by this deal until common sense took hold.

The currency exchange, the shipper or some combination of both.  I've never paid customs charges on any of my Amazon.co.uk purchases.  But then, I've always used their currency conversion service and I've always used the cheapest shippiong method - regular mail.  None of the titles I've ordered from them were ones I needed right now, so it made sense to trade a longer wait time for a lower price.  And, in fact, most of my discs have arrived several days ahead of the estimated delivery date.

Actually, I just used their cheapest shipping option as usual, but this time, they opted to ship via UPS for whatever reason -- last time, they opted for DHL.

Odd.  Mine have always been delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, having originated with the Royal Mail.  I've never had an order shipped via one of the private carriers like UPS or DHL.  That's the other disadvantage to order from the UK for me, the fact that I can't track the packages in transit.  Plus they aren't hand-delivered by the delivery driver.  I have to wait until the USPS delivers it to our mail room and one of the guys eventually drops it off in our department's copier room, where our individual mail slots are located.

Von's is being a patriotic grocery store and this weekend has a 50% off sale on all DVDs and blurays regularly priced at 9.99 and 11.99 respectively.

in other words, blurays for $6.

Borders has 50% off Blu-rays through July 4 for their reward club members. Since it is off of MSRP there aren't many good deals. At least that's what I found when I stopped by, but I thought I'd pass it along anyway. It's also available online with the code BTJ7933K.

Just ordered Jason And The Argonauts for $15.42 shipped from Barnes & Noble.

Use the Library portal here and use coupon code K7P9U8B at checkout. If you have a membership, you can get free shipping even though it's under $25. Without that, you may have to find something else to purchase or pay shipping which  will still likely put it under Amazons current price.

If you can wait till tomorrow,  and they don't raise the price, you can save an extra 5% when the 20% off coupons get activated. The K7 one above is only 15% off.

20% coupons?  Tell us more.

Guess I didn't look close enough. The 20% code is for new account activations. It's easy to open a new account even if you already have multiple accounts already, but the shipping charges will still apply for order totals under $25.

Use A7C7C4Y or U8K3U4A when(ever) you open a new account whether you are a member or not. If you are, you get free ship regardless of the total order, if not you need to spend $25 before it kicks in or pay the $3 s/h.

Too much work.  I've discovered I'm more lazy than greedy.    I just used the 15% coupon, took the discount and free 3 day shipping was was satisfied.  Thanks for the code.  Shipping this morning, should have it on Monday.

Later,

Joe

Paul, is a pin number needed?

Not sure what you mean by PIN number. Anyone can order through the links. You'll just pay shipping if the order is under $25 and you don't have their yearly $25 membership (you input the number on the front of the card if you do- box is just above the box for coupon codes).

In any case they just lowered the price of this to under $19- 10% off the bat.

The same coupon code will take this down to ~$13 (w/ tax) now.

Paul,

Is there some particular reason to use the "library portal" for this?  I just tried going direct to the regular B&N site, and the coupons seem like they would work for that anyway -- that means I could still go thru Bing.com and get some Bing cashback on top.

Am I missing something?

Anyway, gonna see if I can find a couple good <$20 BDs to go w/ Jason and the Argonauts for their still ongoing B2G1 deal.

Thanks for the heads up...

It asks for a pin number on this page:

https://btobshop2.barnesandnoble.com/shop/op.asp?x=5618807&UIAction=resetShipMethod

Is there another page that asks for the coupon?  I went all the way to the end of the checkout procedure and I didn't see anyplace where that coupon code was valid.

That link's not working for me right now, so I couldn't check.  But that sounds like you're entering the coupon code in the gift card/certificate section (where PIN is needed), instead of the coupon code entry box, if the checkout works the same as the regular site.  On the regular site's checkout page, the coupon code is entered just below the B&N membership number -- enter the code there and then cilck the "Calculate Order Total" button.

I just tried going thru the portal's checkout, and it looks like it should work the same although the page looks somewhat different (ie. more spartan) than the regular site.

The Library portal will take an extra 10% off the current price right off the top before any other coupons.

That may work out better than the BING discount.

I tried going thru the checkout process, stopping just before commiting, but didn't see the extra 10% off that you mentioned.  The price looks the same ($15.49 before coupon, taxes, etc) as what I get w/ the regular B&N site.

Oh well...  no biggy.  It's probably close enough either way.  Thanks.

The price should show the discount being taken off when you hit the cart page.

It won't be reflected in the running total at the top of the page next to the 'cart'- you have to go to the actual cart page, or go through the checkout.

I didn't realize they had extended the B2G1 sale. That's worked out to be a great deal when combined with the various discounts and coupons.

Last week I was able to get A Star Is Born, along with An American In Paris and 10 Things I Hate About You,  all Bds for an average price of $15.50 each. I was quite happy with that score. Looking forward to both ASIB and AAIP both of which I've never seen before.

I still don't see any discount.  I put the coupon code in the box below the membership number, and I get a total of $20.09.  I have no idea what's wrong.
