A question about my cable box and my new MItsu RP.

I'm not really sure which area this belongs in since it pertains to my cable box rather than the tv itself but here goes.

Last night as I was getting the room prepared for the arrival of the new tv I noticed that my Motorola DCT-6208 DVR box doesn't have an HDMI output which is what I was planning to use to feed the HD signal to my tv.

Now, it does however have a DVI output, my question is can I buy an HDMI to DVI cable and use it that way?

I really don't want to exchange the box because I have a bunch of stuff recorded on it that I don't want to delete and thus lose and I also don't want to feed the HD signal via componant video, either.

An DVI to HDMI cable should work fine, with the obvious caveat that you'll need an alternative audio connection. As for HDMI vs. component - with my Sony DVD player I cannot see any difference at all between the two, and believe me, I've looked.

Completely irrational post alert:

I like Component. Something about 3 thick cables going from the player to the display device tells me "yeah, it's being fed a good picture"

Some Motorola boxes are notorious for their lousy DVI->HDMI compatibility, so try it but beware. That said, there will be very, very little, if any, difference in picture between HDMI and component. HDMI is more for copy protection of HD content than anything else.

Thanks, guys. What I might do is just buy an adapter for the end of one of my spare HDMI cables instead of a whole new cable. What you said, Jeff does make me cautious but if I must use componant I will, at least until I can get all of my recordings off of my DVR and onto dvd's and swap out the box for one with HDMI.

I definitely can see how that would be comforting on a psychological level.

I'll never forget Vince Maskeeper's "colored water" explanation for how componant video worked, it's the gold standard in trying to explain it to people lol.
