HDMI to Component Input

Is it possible to put the upscaled 1080 HDMI output from the DVD through a converter to connect to the Component Inputs on the TV?

The reason I wish to do this is that my older LG Plasma does not have HDMI input. I am hoping to use the upscaled HDMI signal into the component to benefit from a higher res image.

Maybe the component input cannot handle this res anyway?

I understand that HDMI is digital and Component is analogue so a conversion would have to take place.

I have seen converters that do this the other way around, that is, Component to HDMI, but not the way I want to go.

Any suggestions please?

Keep in mind that upscaling does not give you true higher res. Resolution is limited by the original DVD. To get actual higher resolution you have to get Blu-ray/HD-DVD. It's akin to enlarging a photo; you can blow up a 3 megapixel capture to the same size as a 10 megapixel one, but it won't be as sharp.

All you are doing if you succeed is comparing scaling in the DVD player vs. scaler in the TV set (TV always upconverts by itself to native resolution), which does the least damage. Differences are usually subtle & can go either way. Also if it's an older plasma w/o HDMI, it's probably a 768p set not 1080 so the set has to rescale anyway, and normally multiple scaling steps are worse than a single step from 480p to the native res.

That said there are some converters of fuzzy legality like HDFury, VisionFC4. Personally I wouldn't bother unless the Blu-ray start using the image constraint token & you don't want to get a new TV.

Allan,
Does your plasma have DVI? If so, you may be able to use an HDMI to DVI cable to get upconversion. Check your documentation to see if your DVI port (if you have one) is HDCP compliant. If so, that would be the way to go.

HDMI is digital, and component is analog, so you need a converter of some sort. I think many AV receivers that accept HDMI may have component outputs, but as stated above, I'm not sure it's worth all of the bother.

I would get a PS3 (or other Blu Ray Player) and use component output and use it to upscale your old DVD's.

There aren't any AV receivers that convert HDMI->component that I know of. Component -> HDMI, there are plenty. One of the big reasons behind HDMI was to close the so called "analog hole" of component for copy protection, so that's one reason why receivers don't do it, just these quasi-legal devices.

None of these will upscale over component. But like I said above, it probably wouldn't matter, output component @ 480p, let the TV do the upscaling part. But I certainly recommend getting a Blu-ray at some point, for the actual Blu-ray discs.

Such converters are probably illegal under the DMCA, which is annoying.
