FEB. 5 | 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment continues to rally around disc-embedded digital copies with the April 1 standard DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Alvin and the Chipmunks. Both Blu-ray and standard two-disc special edition versions of Alvin will contain a copy of the movie that can be moved to and watched on a wide variety of devices, including Apple iPods, Mac computers and PCs. Last month, Fox secured the ability to use Apple's digital rights management technology on the digital copies embedded in DVDs, allowing the copies to be transferred to and played on iPods, the most popular portable video device. With that ability, Fox promised to aggressively offer such digital copies on its DVDs. The studio added digital copies to Jan 15. title Family Guy Presents: Blue Harvest and will include them on March 11 release Hitman. Alvin and the Chipmunks, which generated more than $208 million theatrically, will mark one of Fox’s first titles in which the copy is also available on its Blu-ray version. Carrying a March 5 prebook date, Alvin will be priced at $29.98 for the standard single disc; $34.98 for the standard special edition; and $39.98 for the Blu-ray. On standard DVD, the digital copies are only included on the special edition, not the single disc. Fox is supporting the release with a marketing blitz that is designed to make more than 3 billion consumer impressions. TV commercials are slated for such popular programming as American Idol, Dancing With the Stars and Hannah Montana. Kellogg's will feature the DVD on more than 50 million cereal boxes, and ICEE is backing collectible Alvin-themed squeeze bottles available at K-Mart and Sears. Bonus features on both the special edition and Blu-ray versions include the two featurettes "Chip-Chip-Hurray!" and "Hitting the Harmony." |

Confirming earlier speculation. Fox has alerted retailers that it plans to bring 'Alien vs. Predator: Requiem' to Blu-ray this April. Word first surfaced of a 'AVPR' Blu-ray release at CES last month, when Fox previewed some of the bonus features planned for the disc, including a BD-Live-based interactive game. Anticipation was further stoked only days later when Fox announced an April 15 Blu-ray debut for the original 'Predator' -- a date which promised to be an obvious cross-promotional launch for the latest big-screen installment. Now Fox has confirmed to retailers that the dueling species of 'Requiem' will indeed attack Blu-ray on April 15, day-and-date with the standard-def DVD. With a full media announce still waiting in the wings, there are no further supplemental details or tech specs just yet, but we'll keep you posted. Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray will be $39.98. |
