Last night I watched again A CHILD IS WAITING, a 1963 film about retarded children that features two great movie stars--Burt Lancaster and Judy Garland--at the height of their acting skills. I understand that producer Stanley Kramer re-cut the film against the wishes of Director John Cassavetes. This remains a tough, uncompromising film but would it be possible for MGM/UA to license out this remarkable film to Criterion, which has already released a Cassavetes boxset? Maybe a commentary by Gena Rowlands and Steven Hill or a reconstruction of Cassavetes' original intention? This is a challenge that cries out for Criterion.
