Re: Costco Selection

Well, I have to say that even regular Walmart is generally cheaper what with their "ship to store" feature on their website now.

The wholesale warehouse "stores" like Costco/BJ's/Sams will have to do better.

Amen, brother! I am constantly disappointed that Blu-ray prices aren't better at BJs.

I, Robot & Independence Day may be considered "catalog" titles, but are also actually new releases this week.

And I wasn't aware PotC 1 & 2 were "must own." But, that must be why I own them. Since PotC 3 isn't, apparently, "must own"...I guess I should get rid of it!

Re: Costco Selection

RE: pricing, I don't know. I never found Costco's pricing on DVD to be all that great either on the few occasions I bothered to check. In general, I think Costco just isn't great for competitive pricing of all things consumer electronics. IMHO, they're better for bulk purchases of produce, diapers and such -- or if you want a great return policy on something.

In any case, despite the pricing issue, I think it's a fine start anyhow (for the purpose of raising consumer awareness) to see new releases of BDs showing up at Costco. And at least it looks like their prices either beat or are competitive to BB and CC when no special sales are going.

Re: Costco Selection

Costco has historically cycled through good and bad pricing. $8.99 for Warner 2-disc SEs may not seem like a steal now, but they've had 'em down around the $10 range for a long time.

Also, their coupon deals sometimes offer great bargains on boxed sets. I remember getting all three seasons of original Trek for $190 back when it was very hard to find them for less than about $90 apiece.

Indeed. I bought the Alien Quadrilogy (why don't they use a real word - Tetralogy?) set w/ a coupon for $19.99.

Re: Costco Selection

Costco has often had the best prices on dvd releases, though generally they were on the box sets (e.g., Looney Tunes, WB collections, tv season sets, etc.). On the other hand, they've always been weak on animated Disney (running $18.29 on dvds that Wal-Mart carries for $14.87), and now it looks like Blu-ray may be an area where they're not competitive on price either. But for box sets and the like, they are still apt to be the best deal around, and we can only hope that for blu-ray they come around.

Ditto for BJs.

Re: Costco Selection

Got Looney Tunes Volume 1 yesterday finally. Lucy put the veto on Volume 3 though.

Re: Costco Selection

My local Costco has just started stocking BDs, but the selection takes up about 1/20 of the display rack and it's mostly catalogue titles.

Re: Costco Selection

Give it time, they are ramping up and it will be huge eventually.

Re: Costco Selection

The Costco near me has never stocked blu-ray. They did stock HD DVD for a while, but that has ended.

Interestingly my local Walmart which had stocked both blu-ray and HD DVD now has no HDM at all, and is no longer selling the players. I asked the electronic department manager about it, he said that Walmart had decided that HDM was a failure and that they had no plans to carry it in the future. No idea how reliable his information is.

Are you speaking as someone with inside information, Sam? Or, are you just figuring that Costco will be jumping on the BD bandwagon?

Re: Costco Selection

No inside information other than talking to floor people. They have seen a big upswing in flat panels and they tell me that they are ramping up starting with a lot of disney titles, and that has already happened. Yesterday there were titles from all of the studios there and the number of boxes is growing each time I am there. They are now actively showing BDs on the flat panels too, and the Sony BD deck saw a decent price drop.

Edit: This is how DVD grew there too. Once the titles hit $19.99 forget about it, J6P will be hooked, I'm convinced of it...

Re: Costco Selection

I guess I was just intrigued by your use of the word "huge." I would suspect it will be a very long time before Costco ever gets BD sections comparable to what's in place now for SD.

Re: Costco Selection

I suspect Blu-Ray selection at Costco will be quite large come October for the Holiday season. This past season they had some the Warner 4 film sets
for I think $55 and then they had a $10 off coupon so that was a good deal. They also had a 2 disc set of the Blu Ray of Cars and Ratatouille for about $30 after instant rebate I think. Not sure of the exact prices but the deals seem good at the time.

It's Costco: Huge means you are buying an 18 pack of BDs

Re: Costco Selection

And those 18 consist of three different movies.

Re: Costco Selection

And to think I felt deprived because there are no Costco's near me. After reading this, I've lost interest in them. My Sam's, by the way, has not restocked their BR display in months and only ever carried Transformers in HD DVD (none of those are left). Sometimes I wonder why I keep paying them a membership fee.

Re: Costco Selection

Well let's put it this way. I was the first person I know to own DVDs. About 2 months in Costco got a few DVDs. About a year later DVDs were as cheap or cheaper than VHS. About 3 years in they had as many DVDs as VHS. About a year after that there were only a trickle of VHS. Today they have none. And I mean NONE. There are already more BDs at Costco than there were DVDs in that product's lifetime, and they are aggressively pushing flat panels AND ps3s together with BDs, this is win-win-win for them. Now that the war is over I predict huge and I mean huge.

Download is the future but BD is still going to be a monster and I continue to predict that it WILL overtake DVD faster than people suspect, and I expect Costco to be as big or bigger a driver as anyone given how they seem to be ramping it up. Was major smiles for me in BB this week seeing the heavily expanded BD section, both here and in ohio. Target is ramping up. I dont have a wally near me but I suspect they are going to notice and move aggressive there too. Amazon has the first major new release BD for under $19 already. Things are moving fast.

I'm a technologist and gear head, and I'm OFTEN wrong about the technologies that I think will really resonate with people. I don't think I'm wrong about this one tho. I think that retailers have a vested interest in really milking this three way win, especially as DVD margins are now razor thin, and I expect to see a lot of interesting news this year.

I hope you're right then.

Well, considering how long it's been since they stopped manufacturing VHS tapes, you can't be too surprised!

Really? Your Costco must be the exception -- mine only has a handful of BDs and it sounds like most others do too.

IMO once the general street price of BD discs crosses the $20 barrier at Walmart and Best Buy, the floodgates will open. 2008 holiday season at the latest (unless the studios get stupid ).

That's why I'm really excited by I am Legend at Amazon, I hope this is a glimmer of things to come.

Re: Costco Selection

Yea, me too. It is cool that a BR version is actually outselling the SD-DVD version. This is why I am not believing the doom and gloom in the other thread.

Re: Costco Selection

Quite a large selection of Blu-Ray discs at my Costco, mostly $25.99 to $26.99. No trace of anything HD-DVD related, though.

Also selling the Sony BR Player for $379.

Re: Costco Selection

I buy my TV series on DVD at costco for cheap, but that's about it. In terms of Blu-ray I have found that costco is carrying more in my area. I am hoping that when blu-ray catches on more costco can buy more thus dropping the price. The sam's club near me does not really carry that many blu rays, but I hope that competition between the two stores does me well in terms of price savings.

Re: Costco Selection

I was in Costco (Beltsville, MD) yesterday. The same smallish area of the DVD section was devoted to BD as during my last visit a few weeks ago. They still had mostly new releases at around $26.99. However, they now have a few titles at $18.99. As I recall, they included Transporter, The Shining, Clockwork Orange, 2001, and maybe a few others. I believe these titles are $19.99 at Amazon. There was nothing that I felt the desire to purchase, but it's still a step in the right direction.

Ooooooh. Nice to see the Kubrick BD prices drop down. I'll have to check my BJs Warehouse Club.
