Costco Selection

I made an interesting observation in my local Costco yesterday.

NO BLU-RAY DISCS ON THE SHELF.

NO HD-DVD DISCS ON THE SHELF.

NONE. ZIP. NADA.

Dunno what to read into this. A victim of HD pricing? A temporary stock issue at one store?

Interesting.

I've been keeping my eyes open at Costco for some time now.

Other than a couple of "Best of Blu-Ray" box sets during the holidays
I haven't seen any titles being regularly stocked.

Maybe it was the "war" or maybe the demand hasn't been there.

I'm sure they'll begin stocking something soon. At least I hope so!

My local BJs Wholesale Club (a warehouse club similar to Costco or Sam's) has been BD-only since the beginning.

They only stock (maybe) a couple-dozen titles at any one time. There certainly seems to be no rhyme or reason...but then their DVD section doesn't have an extreme amount of organization either,

I can't imagine why Costco would bail on HD media altogether...

The Costcos here in Idaho have quite a few of both kinds, although their taste in discs to stock leaves something to be desired.

As of this writing, my Costco doesn't stock any HD media. HD displays? Yes. PS3s? Yes. Standalone players of either flavour? No. HD media? No. I'll update the next time I'm in an Edmonton Costco, but seeing as the nearest one is Red Deer, I'm kind of stuck.

Update: apparently, they do stock HD media online, but pickings are slim and there is no price advantage.

As of a couple weeks ago, my local store was the same. They never really had all that much to choice from, but this time there was nothing.

For whatever reason, their media prices are not always that great, but I was surprised about the lack of any hi-def titles of either format.

My Costco carried HD DVD disc for 5 or 6 months last year. They never carried any blu-ray discs. Now they don't have any discs at all, just players.

I have always had bad luck when buying things from costco...especially electronics...although there returns department always was very helpful

I finally got a Costco membership and sad to say, their HD selection is underwhelming.
I try to stop by there once a week and most of the time they have some Infomercial juicer demonstration taking up the normal DVD area.
They can't do that near the food aisle???

Anyway, I haven't seen any new Blu-Ray releases since the Simpsons, hopefully that will change.
Sam's Club isn't much better but they have 5 times the selection.
I picked up the Ultimate Avengers 1 & 2 Blu-Ray for $21 a few weeks ago.

Ones by me are hit or miss. They sometimes have the Disney and WB 4 packs, and if you are lucky some individual Universal and WB HD DVDs (usually not new releases)

Wholesale clubs have never been a reliable place to purchase DVDs. Their business model is different than a typical store, so they're not going to carry a regular stock of titles. They're going to do a couple of large buys, usually of new releases or catalog combo packs, and sell them until they're out and not restock.

Costco only buys product in bulk when they get a really good deal on it. So I would not read anything into them not having a selection of HDM or a lack of HDM. When Costco can get a really good deal on them and they feel they can sell alot of them, then you will see Blu-ray titles.

My local BJ's has quite a nice selection- they have a whole rack devoted exclusively to Blu. Unfortunately their prices aren't too hot- better off ordering online.

I agree with that..except about the nice selection, Eric. Mine has an "okay-to-not-so-great" selection.

Update: Disney is Blu at Costco in a big way. Over 15 different disks. Not too cheap at $26.50 a disk but that will come in time. I bought Ratatouille just to show support and because I heard it had a mini DVD-essentials on it. I wanted to try updating my pj calibration for the PS3 with this, will see how it goes.

Costco also had a ton of Planet Earths in Blue and zero HD DVDs of any kind. Hazlet NJ.

Oh, there were still 5 $79 specials on the shelves, tho one is open box.

I didn't look for players from either format, but there were three of the costso double row boxes of BD. One was planet earth, the other was a mixture of titles from Lionsgate and a few other studios (drawing a blank on what they were at the moment, no coffee yet this AM).

My Costco has a good BR selection but the prices are not realistic. Amazon was much cheaper.

Well, sounds like it's a start anyhow. Disney animation and blockbuster action flicks and Planet Earth are probably the kinds of titles you'd want to see (to help draw the masses) at Costco.

BTW, I had my wife try picking up a $79 Tosh A3 at our local Costco just before the rebate deadline, but they didn't have any available. Oh well...

I checked out 2 Sam's Club store over this past weekend and their HD selection was almost non-existent, maybe 3 or 4 titles and couple of each. Not sure what's going on there.

I live near Costco's flagship store and HQ and when I stopped in today they had a Sony Blu-Ray player running front and center as you walk in. I guess that's a good sign. Of course their disc prices are too high but that's been the case with many of their SD-DVD releases lately as well.

Yeah; generally speaking, Costco's strength on DVD has always been catalogue titles and box sets, like that Fantastic 4 deluxe pack they had over the holidays.
