I think the PS3 is a pretty good player, but I have noticed one thing that I don't like when playing DVDs. I have it hooked up through the VP50 processor I picked up and I notice that on DVDs the picture "jitters" vertically. It is especially noticeable on menus and title cards. When I watch closely I can see the "jitter" occuring during the actual movie. I really started noticing it when I was watching DAMN THE DEFIANT. That movie doesn't look all that good as it is, so I thought maybe it was just bad encoding. I switched it over to my A1 and the picture was rock solid so something is going on with the PS3. Anybody have any ideas? I have tried various setting changes but the "jitter" persists. For the time being, I guess I will use my A1 for DVDs.

I wish I can help you as I have the VP-50, but I never experienced that problem with my BR players. I have over the course of the last two years tried the Samsung's BP-1000 and 1400 along with the Panasonic BD-30 in my main HT. Now, I haven't played a lot of DVDs with my blu-ray players because I prefer to play them on my Oppo-970HD player because I rather send a 480i signal to the VP-50 and let it upconvert to 1080p which leaves my BD-30 for only BRD. I've since retired the BP-1000 to being a backup and have the 1400 currently in my bedroom HT where I use a XA-2 for upconverting any DVDs that I watch in my bedroom.
Does the PS3 have a 480i setting or is it 480p like it's on my BR players? Also, how many fps do you have the VP-50 set at with the 1080p out signal?

Re: PS3/VP50pro Issue
Hi. Sorry, it's taken so long to respond. From what I can see the PS3 outputs in 480p. I have the PReP function on the VP 50 turned on. It is supposed to reinterlace the 480p signal and then the signal is upconverted to 1080i/p, whichever one has been selected for the output signal. Presently, I have the unit VP50 output set to 1080i/60 as my set is too old to support 1080p.I certainly would like to get rid of my old Toshiba 57HX81. I really am getting annoyed with it. Alas, that is not going to be for some time yet. When I do upgrade, I would like to go front projection as I do not watch any network TV whatsoever. The problem is, after looking at some projectors, the only one I would really have liked to get was the JVC DLA-HD1. The black levels looked amazing on that particular unit. Unfortunately, it is just a little out of my price range right now.
To get a really good LCD or Plasma still requires a purchase in excess of 3 grand, at least IMO. For that kind of money, I would rather explore front projection.
I still have my old Toshiba SD-3109 DVD player, which outputs in 480i only. I might have to pull it out and experiment with it; although the A1 seems to do a more than adequate job with DVDs. At least, it doesn't "jitter" like the PS3 was doing. I will say one other thing, though.
This VP50 has allowed me to watch any number of upconverted DVDs and I have come to the conclusion that upconverted DVD is nowhere near true HD. The image looks pretty good, but almost all of the upconverted DVDs I have watched always seem to look "soft" to me.
Some anime discs I have actually seem to look better if they are output in 480. Upconverting them really tends to "soften" up the image.
