4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB - Page 3

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

DIRTY DINGUS MAGEE was omitted from the Sinatra sets. It was a funny western with a script by Joseph Heller, and it was one of Sinatra's many "final/farewell/goodbye/no more" films. It would fit well into a Comedy Western Collection with MANY RIVERS TO CROSS, THE ROUNDERS, WILD ROVERS, THE SHEEPMAN or a wild card like CALLAWAY WENT THATAWAY or TEXAS CARNIVAL.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

It's terrific that these releases will be available as individual releases.

The Golden Years seems like a true winner of a boxset purchase, then I'll look at the reviews of the other releases.

Looks like Sergeants 3 WILL be available separately after all.

Your link is bad. Anyhow, I noticed the other day that it had a preorder price of $10.49 on DVDEmpire's site.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

I could have held off for the box set of " The Golden Years " collection but picked up all the individual titles today except None But The Brave and all told the box set would have been just a few dollars cheaper. Sometimes the collection is much later as well, just couldn't resist I guess! I'll check them out over the next few days.

Thought i would try my hand at a few captures.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Nice, Brent. But, the third link doesn't seem to work.

The rest look pretty good. Although #5 looks pretty soft.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Well, I hope they at least give those interested an idea of the overall video quality, here are some from the Tender Trap.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Thanks very much for all those captures Brent, much appreciated. I'm very much looking forward to Some Came Running, the widescreen VHS I own is worn out.

EDIT: My copy of the boxed set has been filled at DVDPacific. So it looks like they've got it a couple of weeks early (as usual).

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Any screen cap comparisons between the previous versions of TMWTGA?

This is the one title I imagine most are holding out for...

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Thanks for the screen captures Brent! Can hardly wait for The Tender Trap (and the others - I pre-ordered all of them long ago)!!!

I can't imagine it will be worse. Wasn't the SE released last year converted from PAL to NTSC?

Thanks for the screen captures Brent!

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Since the anticipation for a number of you concerns The Man With The Golden Arm - which I partially watched last night - and it's video quality I will download some "screen shots" .

I'm surprised they trasfered it at 16:9. I was expecting 4:3, or possibly 1.66:1. Those shots still look fine though, and the transfer quality looks very good.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

The Beaver on the Sinatra-Kelly set.

Very surprised these are the same transfers as the 2000 versions. But as I am buying the 3 other Sinatra sets and I already have the Kelly-Sinatra films (of course!), it will make it easier on my wallet this month! If there is anything you learn from musicals, it's that there is a good side to everything!

Really? I was hoping Warners would do a special edition of On the Town for it's 60th annivesary next year but when I heard about this release I figured it wouldn't happen.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Another masterpiece from Warner Bros: The early years dvd's do not even include a chapters menu selection. One thing is sure, this is the last box set I buy from them, I am really really disappointed, I can't forget the poor picture's quality of "the Pirate" last year, the "Browncolor" not technicolor of the "Barkleys of Broadway", the poor sound (hiss) of the "Broadway Melody of 1938" this year and so many other mistakes.

I hate it when they do that. They did that with the Myrna Loy/Bill Powell spotlight collection last year.

Maybe I will wait on buying these!

Just found this review of the Early Years Collection on DVDTalk

Really looking forward to this collection next week

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

I will have an early years review up by the end of the week. So far, the A/V quality is very very good (I've watched "Double Dynamite", "The Kissing Bandit", and "It Happened in Brooklyn").

To be completely clear, the Kelly-Sinatra set is digitally identical to the titles released eight years ago or so. I checked the dates on the "VOB" files. The only difference is the disc art and packaging (pictures of the stars replace original promotional art).

Regards,

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Is "The House I Live In" included as a bonus on any of the Sinatra discs?

That alone would sell me a package.

Me too. But, it's not. Very few features on these discs.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

"Newly re-packaged" does not encourage me when it comes to the Sinatra-Kelly musicals. We really need brand new transfers of ON THE TOWN and ANCHORS AWEIGH. I'd have thought this would be the perfect opportunity for Warner Bros. to upgrade these, as they have been for their other MGM musicals.

Why do we need new transfers for On the Town and Anchors Aweigh?

Because the previous transfers look bad and have really lackluster colors? And the screencaps from Tender Trap and Some Came Running look pretty lackluster, too, IMHO. I have a French DVD of Some Came Running that's much more colorful than those caps. I'll still buy Tender Trap and hope it looks better than the captures. Does anyone have it yet? Does it look better? :-(

Would you be willing to post some comparisons of the French DVD against similar frames to those that have already been posted?

VLC makes captures easy:
VLC media player - Overview

Just start the DVD. Then pause it on the shot you want to capture and go to VIDEO / SNAPSHOT

The captures of Some Came Running look pretty accurate to me, but my only experience of that film is a widescreen VHS tape.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

I've never done a capture before - I'll see if I can figure it out - does anyone else have the French DVD?

I don't agree with you about the two films I noted and I never said anything about those other two titles because I rather wait until I can view them on my own HT setup.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

TENDER TRAP looks better than I've ever seen it.
I was surprised that IT HAPPENED IN BROOKLYN didn't even have a "scene selection" option....looks like some of this was done in a hurry.

Wonderful sets for those of us who itch for releases of the "oldies".
