Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Well it's not unreasonable.

The company puts it out there for the public who are entitled to their opinions, good or bad. Until reviews turn up to reveal significant improvement on the technical end, all is fair game, no?

I never said it wasn't which is why I stated it's impossible not to talk about these titles before they're actually released. You don't like the artwork and that portion of the dvd release is important to you while artwork for me isn't that big of a deal so we are different in that regard so why so defensive? The importance of forums such as ours is to discuss whether we agree or disagree on issues.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

I was fully expecting a Sinatra set sometime this year, but this blows the doors off of what I was expecting. I was hoping for "Some Came Running" along with a few others. WOW!

Luckily, the only titles that I currently own are the Rat Pack titles so I don't have to worry about much double-dipping.

The inclusion of "When the Lion Roared" seems a bit odd, but I'm not going to complain as I've been begging for this documentary for some time. Time to unload my LD boxset before it quickly devalues.

As for the artwork, I'm not a big fan of it, but I've seen much much much worse (The Three Stooges set for a quick example). Like Marco, I don't understand why they need to create new artwork when such legendary artwork already exists. It's obvious to me that they are targeting more than just classic film buffs with this release though and they must figure that this art will catch the eye of more than us classic junkies.

It sounds like this was probably one of the announcements from the upcoming WB anniversary celbration that was leaked. As much as I enjoy hearing about it, it will make the eventual surprise that much less surprising.

Either way, bring it on!!!

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

So which of the Sinatra/Kelly titles will feature the When The Lion Roars documentary? The press release makes it seem like they will otherwise just be repackagings.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

I am so excited about this release! I will buy the whole thing for sure

It Happened in Brooklyn is an underrated musical gem - one of my favorite MGM musicals - and Sinatra's two earliest RKO musicals are marvellously entertaining. I have been waiting for The Tender Trap to come our way for a long time, ditto for Marriage on the Rocks. And to think we get the exceptional MGM: When the Lion Roars as a bonus is more than I ever hoped for!!!

All I can say is Warner did it again!!!

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

IT HAPPENED IN BROOKLYN is the film where Sinatra first sang the majestic "Time After Time" which alone makes it worth the price.

Isn't the "When the Lion Roared" just a segment? I know the segment was on the Anchors Aweigh dvd.

Will there ever be a special edition of On the Town? I keep waiting and waiting but nothing! And I already own Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

Wow I can't believe Sinatra is getting four sets hopefully Warner will do this for other stars. And I must say the artwork is really ugly, but to each his own.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

All these are mine!!! I was very close to buying the Gene Kelly titles the other day. Lucky I didn't.

My brother is a Sinatra freak and will be absolutely stoked!

Pity it couldn't include the musical version of Our Town. I love the song 'The Impatient Years'. But I guess that is a whole different kettle of fish.

Thank you Warners.

Maybe they will be dual sided discs, with the original version of the film on one side, and then an episode of The Lion Roars on the other side of each discs?

IMDB says the full documentary is 3 roughly 2 hour documentaries:
Quote:
The on-screen subtitles (and running times taken from the TCM print) for the three individual parts are: "Part One: The Lion's Roar" (02:02:06) "Part Two: The Lion Reigns Supreme" (02:01:00) "Part Three: The Lion in Winter" (02:02:24)

I was figuring it would be on it's own disc...since it looked like the Sinatra/Kelly set was the only box with just three titles in it....and, as someone has pointed out already, three titles which are apparenty going to just be re-packaged.

I agree! Stop complaining and be thankful that Warner is off to a great first half of 2008!

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Considering how much people on the boards were complaining about few or no classic film releases during the last quarter of 2007, it is odd that people are now complaining about artwork when given all these classic films new to DVD and all for one artist. Human nature I guess. Something better to complain about is why aren't these being released in blu-ray? At least the Gene Kelly set would be worth a double dip if it were also available in blu-ray.
Does seem odd that these are being released to mark 10th anniversary of Frank Sinatra's death but whatever it takes to get them out there.
I also wonder if the complete When The Lion Roared is included on the Gene Kelly set. That bonus would probably be 3 discs by itself. But then again Warner's did release Here's Looking At You Warner Bros as a bonus disc on a box set. I guess we wait for the official announcement from Warner Bros.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

From the press release it looks like the extra included in the Sinatra-Kelly box is only the 'When the Lion Roars' excerpt from the previous Anchors Aweigh, as KellyVO stated up.

Follow the link, hit the 'Press Room' header, then 'Search' in the sub-menu and it's the second item under February 4.

Sergeants 3 has been tied up in rights hell for years, so I'm buzzed to see that one listed, especially!

You'll forgive me, though, if I keep my fingers crossed...

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

Is the documentary "When The Lions Roars" going to be in only one box set (with Gene Kelly) or are there going to be parts of the documentary in each of the three sets.

Does any one know if Sinatra's "The House I Live In", just added to the LOC National Film Registry, is available on any DVDs. It is listed as being in one from St Claire, but I was wondering if there were any others that had it.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

the 50th anniversary Man with the golden arm also suffered from a pal conversion. While it was the best available, it was problematic with ghosting, etc.

Re: 4 FRANK SINATRA COLLECTIONS FROM WB

I'm really confused now. One of the posts sounds like the entire documentary "When the Lion Roars" will be included while another says that only part of the documentary is included.

Now I have to wait before selling my LDs. I hope WB hurries up with the official press release.

I don't mean to pour cold water, and I'm as anxious as the next man to get my hands on a quality copy of WHEN THE LION ROARS, but I would be VERY surprised if the entire six hour documentary is offered as a bonus. I'm guessing it's only an excerpt that deals specifically with the ANCHORS AWEIGH/Sinatra-Kelly period of MGM's history. I haven't watched it lately, but it seems to me there is a section devoted to it/them.

Not sure if Robert Crawford's post was edited after the two most recent comments, but the specs for 'Anchors Aweigh' sound straightforward here:

...which is a feature included on the original snapper release...along with the three theatrical trailers. It seems pretty clear now that the Kelly/Sinatra films are just re-packagings. Nothing new.

Extremely lame if we have to buy a set of three rehashed movies with cheap artwork to finally own this disc...

Just rather shocked that Michèle Morgan's first name is mispelled as "Michelle" on the cover of Higher and Higher!

It must be a new copy protection system. If anyone releases a version with the correct name then it must be a bootleg.

It was just too much to hope for that Warner include the whole of "MGM: When The Lion Roars" as an extra. But when are they going to release it? I seem to remember reading a couple of years back, that they had it all ready for release & were just waiting for a slot, some wait!

From the link in Post #55 (which seems pretty comprehensive):

Quote:
Reminiscent of last year's Ford at Fox set in the sheer quantity of DVD titles for an individual, this wave proves less complicated and more consumer friendly in that ALL THE TITLES will be available as singles. Complete details, including pricing, for individual titles are not yet available. However, sets are listed and available for sale.
