60" Pioneer Projection problem

I have a 60" projection TV, Pioneer Elite and lately I get a ZAP, like someone pulled the plug and the pwer goes off. I then have to get up turn the power button off and back on and the TV comes back until it happens again.Sometimes it's a few minutes other times it an hour or so.
Any help would be appreciated. It's an old tv, 99 and wondering if it's worth fixing.

What sort of projection? CRT? If it were DLP, I'd say time for a new lamp. With a CRT set, it could be as simple as dust causing arcing in the high voltage section. Or, it could be as bad as fried and ready to die parts.

I had a Pioneer Elite 510 with a similar problem. The picture would disappear and come back. A technician traced the problem to the power contol board and repaired it. That was about two years ago. I have since passed the set to my oldest daughter and it is working splendidly. You might want to also take a look at AVS Forum under the rear projection group.

If you would like to keep the set, have an authorized tech come out and look at the power supply or the board. That sounds like the culprit to me. Pioneer rear/pros were always built well until the very end. (The Pro 510 is still probably the finest rear pro ever built) If it is the power supply, that can be a costly repair, also take into consideration of the age of the tubes and how many hours of use you were able to get out of unit. I might recommend to start looking into a plasma/lcd (depending on your taste) at this point because of the money you could potentially be looking at spending repairing the TV. Calibrating the Pioneer rear pro sets were always a pleasure. They always came out perfectly. So do their plasmas.
