From a newbie -- in-wall or bookshelves?

Hello all -- I'm new to the forum, and I would guess this information exists somewhere here, but I can't find it.

I am moving into a new home soon and am in the process of putting my HD theater system together. I had pretty much settled on KEF iQ series speakers. A conversation with a vendor to do the wiring ended up with him making a strong pitch for in-walls (I forget the brand). I've had in-walls for the last 10 years -- they're okay, but I have a hard time believing that even more modern in-walls would sound as good as a system based on good bookshelves or towers.

So, who better to ask than you all, right? Your feedback is greatly appreciated!! BTW SVS speakers were unknown to me until coming here... opinions?

FYI this is the gear:

KEF iQ3 fronts
KEF iQ1 rears
KEF iQ6c center
Sub -- the one I already own for now
Onkyo TX-SR705
Panasonic TH5077U (1080p plasma)
Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blue Ray player

Thanks in advance, Randy

You are right. Just stay away from in-wall speakers unless you have absolutely no choice.

Think of speakers like animals, they are far more impressive when not caged and can radiate in all thier glory. No in wall speakers......I say never. Let em' run wild. "Born free....la, la, la, la, la ,la......" everybody sing!

Re: From a newbie -- in-wall or bookshelves?

I currently have a set of JBL in-walls that I payed close to $300 for 4 years ago. They were a waste of money in my opinion. My $30 Kenwood bookshelf speakers sound a hundred times better than the in-walls do. And that is not saying much. I don't know if it's because my in-wall speakers are mounted so high and they are just shooting the sound over our heads and the bookshelf speakers were mounted on swing arms aimed down at an angle or what the deal is, but the bookshelf speakers just sound way better in my opinion.

With in-wall speakers, if you become disappointed in their performance or location once installed, you're stuck with big holes in your walls.
