Denon 4802 - Zone 2 Problem

I can't get the sub to work in the second zone.

I guess it's possible that the sub cannot be used in the second zone, but I've read nothing to that effect, so I am assuming for now that I am doing something wrong but I don't know what.

Speakers are set to small, the sub works just fine in Zone 1.

There is no separate sub output for Zone 2.

Any ideas?

Re: Denon 4802 - Zone 2 Problem

Well. I've searched extensively here and elsewhere about this issue. The more I read about alternative zones and the more I believe that they aren't meant to be used with the sub output (operative word "believe". I have not read a single presumable factual account of this).

It makes sense on some level since the extra zones are intended to be used in rooms other than the main zone's. Since the receiver only has one Sub output, it's not unreasonable to think it's dedicated to Zone 1. Otherwise, the sub would be outputting low frequency signals from both zones wherever it is located if both zones were on simultaneously (which they might be if they are in different rooms). Unless there was a way to assign the sub to one zone or the other.

Here is the rub: In my case, both zones are in the same (living) room. I will not ever need to have both zones playing together. Consequently, if as I suspect the sub can only work with Zone 1, then I wish it worked with only one zone at a time instead, meaning, I wish there was a way to switch it between Zone 1 to Zone 2 (repeating myself: I don't care about simultaneous sub outputs.)

I suppose, as a last resort, I might have to run the zone 2 speaker wires through the sub's crossover network. Wow. I never thought there would be a day when I would need to use subwoofer crossover, but here we are (I think).

Any thoughts?

OK lemme make this a lot simpler since I am talking to myself here:

Everybody, regardless of what receiver you use, does your subwoofer work when you switch to zone 2?

Thanks

You will have to use the speaker level input on the sub.

Re: Denon 4802 - Zone 2 Problem

The short answer is no, I do not use a sub on Zone 2 mainly because Zone 2 is mainly a 2ch feature and I use speakers with larger woofers capable of handling the bass than I do on the 5.1 area where I use smaller speakers and the sub.

If I did want to use a sub in Zone 2, I'd probably have it feed a dedicated amp with a sub output.

Gaaak... replies!

Thanks, that's pretty much what I figured.

It seems zone 2 is often implemented as an afterthought on receivers of that generation. I would run the wire through the sub, making sure to set the Zone 2 speakers to "large", but guess what: I cannot set the Zone 2 speakers to "large" with my current configuration (where everything else is "small"), making the subs crossover essentially pointless.

So right now in zone 2, since everything below 80Hz dissapears into thin air, even biggers speakrs wouldn't help.

The Denon 4802 is a fantastic receiver that I will keep for years to come still, but bass management is the one thing that could have used some improvement.

If this is true, that's pretty much retarded on the part of Denon. The manual (just flipped through it) makes no reference to the fact you can't switch the Zone 2 speakers to "large". In fact, it doesn't specifically say it's all "small" or all "large". I know lower end models specifically state this but the 4802 doesn't. I expected the 4802 to allow you to set each individual speaker to whaterver you wanted. If I want my Left Surround set to "large", it should be my choice (certainly the case with my current receiver, I'm in control ).

However, if you can't, it looks like the feature is an afterthought meant for speakers to the kitchen/deck where the purpose is background noise. The true Zone 2 capability would be to use the Zone 2 out to another power amplifier where the full range would be exported. A work around would be to reset all speaker sizes when you want to use Zone 2.

Well, this is a 6 year old receiver and if memory serves, bass management in those dark ages was still a PITA on all but the top flagship stuff. Most receivers had their cross over fixed at 80Hz, and you had to spend a couple of grands to get the full flexibility of setting each speaker Xover freq by 10Hz increments or whatever is the norm nowadays. The 48XX was considered flagship I think, but still lacked a couple of the niftier stuff featured by it's bigger brother (58xx).

On the 4802, crossover choices are between 40 and 80 hz but it has to be the same point for all speakers set to small. You can have large mains with small everything else, but I think the only way you can have large surrounds (or zone 2) is to have large mains as well. When I select small mains, I am left with "small" or "none" for my surrounds and Zone 2.
