Blu-Ray in the UK

One of the major UK retailers is committing to Blu-Ray only from March. Interesting to note the ratio of Blu-Ray sales to HD DVD sales.
Woolworths backs Blu-Ray format over HD DVD

Don't know the status of Woolworths in the USA, but in the UK, it's a top five retailer for discs.

It's perhaps worth noting the reply from the HD corner [quoted from http://www.hdtvuk.tv/2008/01/woolworths_to_d.html]:

Hmm ... the majority of studios backing the rival format, a major retailer deciding to sell the rival format only. I agree - it's very hard to see which format will eventually win.

Haven't seen a Woolworth's here in years. There could be some still around, but I haven't seen any.

There are over 800 of them in the UK. I can only assume you don't get out much.

Woolworth was a mainstay in my youth, but every Woolworth in my area has long been closed. If there are any left anywhere, I'd be very surprised.

When I was a kid we used to have a Woolworths where I live. I think they have been out of the North American market for a hella long time now.

F. W. Woolworth Company in the U.S. became defunct in 1997 when they changed their name to Venator Group focusing on sporting goods, Venator's primary brand is Foot Locker.

Woolworths in Austraila and the UK while named after the F. W. Woolworth Company have no actual connection to the original Woolworth company in the U.S.

Ah, I see. Well, in the UK they're just about as prevalent as they ever were (i.e. about the same as they used to be in the USA as well), and though not necessarily market leaders in many respects (that honour has passed to places like Tesco and Asda, the latter now owned by Wal Mart) they still have some shout, and this is especially so in disc sales. Woolworths UK was until recently a very major retailer of CDs, DVDs, et al, and is still a significant retailer. So if they say that they're pulling out of HD DVD, that still has some meaning.
