Thanks for the info David, glad to hear its that good! And good for Stallone. Nothing wrong with a 50 something year old guy kicking ass. John Wayne did it into his seventies!

Stallone is or will be 62 this year. That's right. (so is my father. He doesn't kill people in Burma, but he is an avid tennis player. Meanwhile I can barely get from the couch to the beer in the fridge without being out of breath. WTF.)

Great to hear! So glad to see Rocky and now Rambo end right. And also nice to see Stallone back in top form not only as an actor but as an underatted director as well.

Rocky might be over but Stallone has been talking up more Rambo movies if this one does well...

Re: Rambo IV gets the green light

Thats good to hear. I expected reviews at rottentomatoes by now though.

Re: Rambo IV gets the green light

Rotten Tomatoes is currently running at 32 percent. The good news, however, is that it's one of those movies where even the negative reviews unintentionally make it sound like a good time. I'm especially fond of this pull-quote from a rotten review: "It’s not a movie. It’s an adrenaline pump and purveyor of raw carnage." Works for me!

What movie were you watching? Meat was flying everywhere!

Re: Rambo IV gets the green light

So, does this follow chronologically from 3, or do they pretend Rambo 3 never existed? I remember when Rambo 4 was going to take place in the middle of a city. Maybe still hope for that one next?

It does take place chronologically after 3 as Rambo is still living in Thailand. They also have a quick flashback montage of ALL the three films.

And if there IS a next film

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
judging by the ending, you can guarantee it will probably take place in a city somewhere in America (like the first film)

I realize that this sounds ridiculous but it's done as tastefully as something like that could be. It's in the movie to show the horrible things that actually happen over there but they don't wallow in it.

Patrick:

I did appreciate what Stallone was trying to do with the missionaries, I'm just not sure the actors (who played the missionaries) pulled it off all that convincingly.

Still, Stallone is definitely experiencing a renaissance in his career, and I've been quite impressed with his last two directorial efforts (Rocky Balboa and Rambo) where he has clearly tried to bring something different to the table rather than just rehash what we've already seen.

I agree with part of this but modern weapons are far more dangerous than we might expect and the film shows exactly what these weapons can do to a human body. I thought it was the opposite of cartoonish. Ridiculous? Not even close.

Disturbingly truthful, imho.

Oh, and I loved the flick.

Re: Rambo IV gets the green light

My brother and I both saw Rambo this afternoon and we both loved it. My only complaint is...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The graphic killing of the children at the beginning made me very uncomfortable. Perhaps it's because I have a six month old little boy, but watching (or even thinking about) children being murdered makes me a bit nauseous.

I think the problem is that the graphic display of warfare is overused and over-the-top, and I became de-sensitived to all the carnage (otherwise, I'd probably be littering the aisle with puke), and it started looking like videogame footage or war-porn.

Fair enough. I was very uncomfortable during the many parts of the film and I guess that was the point. I would liken the carnage to that of the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan. I think many will be confused that realistic battle footage abounds in a "Rambo" film, as if that's not possible. Rambo doesn't have to be a punchline.

Re: Rambo IV gets the green light

I was in the mood to be spoiled tonight because I just had to know what other atrocities occur in this film and so I went to IMDB and began reading some truly disturbing things.

I can't believe i'm going to say this about a Rambo film but I think i'll pass, some of the shit i've read here and at IMDB actually make me fear this movie. I mean there's a scene where Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
a boy gets raped by the villain?

No way am I seeing that even if it is largly suggested.

Yeah I know that those horrible things really do happen over there and Stallone wants us to see it in it's rawest form and I can appreciate that but I don't care, it's all too much for me.

Re: Rambo IV gets the green light

I'm going back and forth about this myself. I had a friend who was actually going to be one of those missionaries to the Karen of Burma and had spent a couple summers on short term missions there. So it might be a little too realistic for my tastes too.

Re: *** Official RAMBO Discussion Thread

Inspector Hammer,

The scene you mention is implied, not shown, However I think it's safe to say it's largely suggested.

This movie is pretty much up front at what it's trying to say

It may be the most violent film I've ever seen; and I've seen many ...

To say it is intense is an understatement.

Re: *** Official RAMBO Discussion Thread

To anyone who have trouble with the "mac gyver" explosive scene, as someone wrote on this forum, it's not the Rambo bomb which cause the holocaust, its that there's a Tallboy bomb next to it, that finally is triggered, that's what Rambo does on purpose.

The Tallboy was an earth quake bomb developed by Barnes Wallis and brought into operation by the British in 1944. It weighed five tons and, carried by the Avro Lancaster bomber, was effective against concrete structures against which earlier, smaller bombs had proved ineffective.
An enlarged version of the Tallboy was the Grand Slam bomb.

I'm not sure what version Rambo triggers, but the blast it provokes is 100% on. It's like a nuclear explosion, without the nuclear and radiation just the impact.

Re: *** Official RAMBO Discussion Thread

Harvey Weinstein talks about Rambo V and how he'd like to see Rambo fight in America for the first time since the first film. Be warned, it's a very condescending article.

Re: *** Official RAMBO Discussion Thread

the stats are hilarious. Best thing about the movie is it was totally exploitation without feeling like exploitation if that maes sense. It's the most realistic superhero action movie made. Shame people wont see it since the consesus seems to be that Rambo=stupid.

Re: *** Official RAMBO Discussion Thread

For me personally I don't want to see it because it sounds far too ugly and violent for me, I never thought Rambo was stupid.

and I never mentioned you in the post. Pretty near everyone I've mentioned the Rambo movie to other then the 3 mates who went with me think it sounds corny. Even now, telling people it was one of the best movies I've seen in ages, the "rambo" part causes a bunch of eye rolling. SAdly, Rambo equals "big dumb action movie" to a lot of film fans. I found this Rambo film to be the ballsiest war film to come out in years. More so then eve "saving Private Ryan" since Stallone didn't make it overly sentimental with a bookend side plot that made little sense. Everything that happens in the film fits the character, and the story is lean and tight.

Oh no no I didn't mean to imply that, I was simply giving my reasons. I actually have always thought that these films were very smart behind all the, ya know, explosions and grunting lol.
