I'm looking for some help. I have an extensive dvd collection (mostly widescreen) and I'm looking to figure out a way to switch to blu ray, witch seems to be the way things are going,or HD DVD without having 2 units to watch movies.I've had a 1080p panasonic digital tv and have never seen 1080p anything on it yet. what would be the best move for me to be able to get the best bang for the buck

Re: Bluray and HD DVD
Your existing widescreen DVDs will look nice played from a Blu-ray player, but they wont be HD. They will upconvert really nice! Your Blu-ray discs will be HD, and you can enjoy both Blu, as well as DVD with only the one player!

RicKer is right. At the current time alot of people here feel that the PS3 is the best way to go for a Bluray player. It's somewhat future proof and brings alot more to the table than your standard BD player does. You have to make your own decision of course and yes all Bluray players will play your current region 1/ALL region sd dvd discs.

Re: Bluray and HD DVD
Brad,Welcome to the forum. The PS3 is a very good Blu-ray player, it seems, but it won't play HD DVD.
If you really want 1 unit to play both, there are combo players (that also play SD DVD). Unfortunately, a previously released combo player wasn't up to par, and a very recently one by Samsung has just been retracted to be replaced later this year by an upgraded model. Another brand that has been mentioned to prepare a combo player is Denon, but in this case Q2 or Q3 may also be the first opportunity to purchase those.
So, if you want 1 player to play all, you would need to wait, unless you manage to lay hands on one of the new Samsungs. If you want to start now, you could indeed choose a PS3 (price may come down shortly, based on rumoured conditions of the contract between Sony and Warner) or a Toshiba HD Ax (less studios support HD DVD now and in the near future though, but prices of these are supposed to come down too). The Toshiba series are also noted for their excellent SD DVD upconversion.
These players won't play the "other" HD format though.
