SHIVA X OR A TC9 FOR HOME SUB- WHICH WOULD HAVE MORE OUTPUT?

Put in the correct enclosure with the correct rms, which would have more output and which would play louder lower? Also i own a def tech pf15tl+ which is a 15" 500 watt sub. Would the louder of the two subs listed above be significantly louder than the def tech?
any other feedback would be greatly appreciated.

First, this should probably be in the Projects section since that's where all of the speaker building threards now reside.

The problem with your question is the phrase "correct enclosure". There are only enclosures that try to meet your goals while staying within your constaints.

We have the T/S parameters for the Shiva-X but you don't list any for the TC9. There are dozens of variations of the TC9. For example, the Orion HCCA series, Soundsplinter RL-p series, TC-2000 series, TC-2100 series, Elemental Designs older A series, Elemental Designs SP series, Entasi Audio, Audiomobile, etc all either used or are currently using variations of the TC9 motor. The TC9 comes in dual .75" thick magnet slug, dual 1" thick slug and triple .75" slug variation. I have seven motors with the dual 1" slug with extended pole pieces and one with dual 1" slugs and an even pole piece. On my 12" OEM subs from TC Sounds, it has triple .75" slugs but the top plate is slightly smaller. All of these motor changes as well as the different soft parts impact the final T/S parameters.

Please post the actual manufacturer (other than TC Sounds) of the TC9 or post the T/S parameters so we can at least have some numbers to work with.

For the enclosure, are you wanting ported or sealed? What are your size constraints? What amp are you planning on using? All of this will impact the final numbers.

Those are NOT the Thiele/Small parameters. That's just the basic description of the sub. Those numbers tell you NOTHING about how it will perform. But from that, I assume that it is a direct from TC Sounds TC9 standard driver. 12" or 15"? SVC or DVC? What is the voice coil impedance?

that is exactly correct and it is the 12" and can do large ported.

I'll model it in the morning. But your 1000w amp will only push 500w to the TC9. It's a dual 4 ohm sub so you must wire it for an 8 ohm load. And your 1000w amp is overkill for the Shiva-X. The underhung voice coil can't take that much power.

thank you so much for your help. i could run the dayton 500 for the shiva. Couldn't i run the tc9 in series to achieve a 2 ohm load? not sure if the dayton is set up for that but would have to look. Regardless i will run 800-1000 to the tc9 and 500 or better to the shiva.

if I may ask one more question, what driver would you recommend for a 2.3 cu ft vented enclosure; the slot vent is 15.5"wide by .5 tall by 13" deep?

Connecting the voice coils of the TC9 in series will yield an 8 ohm load. Connecting them in parallel will yield a 2 ohm load. There is no plate amp on the market that will drive a 2 ohm load for any length of time without overheating.

I modeled both subs in a 4 cf net box tuned to 16hz and each receiving 500w from a plate amp. The Shiva X has 3 to 5 db over the TC9 throughout the entire passband. I'd use the O Audio bash amp since it is a 500w amp with a selectable SSF. Otherwise you will have to swap resistors on the Dayton since the SSF is set for 18hz.

What's the Fb of the box? I use Unibox and it only deals with round ports. I don't have time to convert a slot port to round. Also, what is the application of this sub? Music or movies? Car or home theater? Power available?

actually doing a little research, it looks like the image dynamics idq15 might be a nice fit. strictly home theater and 500 watts rms. any other recommendations?

There are dozens of other options. But not many will give you the low distortion of a XBL^2 sub. I haven't used the Shiva-X but I do have the Ascendant Audio Atlas and the Blueprint 01 series which both have XBL^2.
