In wall subwoofer

Need advice. Since my boss (wife) will not tolerate cubes/stands/'big speakers'/'anything that looks funny' in our new house I'm using flush mounted wall and ceiling speakers.

I need a subwoofer that mounts in the wall and have never seen this. This is the first system I've built and need to know: does such a monster exist? where can I find it?

Re: In wall subwoofer

Yes, in-wall subs do exist. A few are mentioned as well as some DIY options - link.

Monster? Not even close. To get into that category without being intrusive into the room, you need to go with an IB sub. These are 100% custom DIY subs but they will provide you with the best bass possible. Here is an example using four 15" subs - link. You can go as crazy as you want. Four 18's, eight 15's or even eight 18's. You are only limited by budget and space outside of your listening area.

If you have an adjacent space which you can use, such as a storage room, an Infinite Baffle sub is the way to go if you can do some basic woodwork. Read about the concept at The Cult Of The Infinitely Baffled. I built an IB sub into my basement movie room about 3 years ago or so, my total cost was very low since I already had an amp. It's the best piece of home theater gear ever. An Infinite Baffle subwoofer will give you many orders of magnitude better performance than an "on-wall" or "in-wall" solution for your subwoofer needs.

As far as in-wall/in-ceiling speakers, there are many options, from cheapos to medium price to very high end stuff. In my house I have some inexpensive in-ceiling speakers from Parts Express as well as some very nice lower end models from Proficient Audio which sound much better than I had expected they would. Both brands recommended depending on your budget, and there are many other great offerings from other companies which could work for you.

Re: In wall subwoofer

Velodyne makes an in-wall subwoofer but I have not heard it or priced it, I imagine it would be more expensive than their freestanding subs.
SubContractor(SC) Series Subwoofers

This would work if you are in the framing stages of your home.

Re: In wall subwoofer

Thanks for the tips & links. I've got something to get started with now. Actually more ideas than I thought possible.

Re: In wall subwoofer

If you have the money going with the velodyne setup would be easiest.

Re: In wall subwoofer

House is built on concrete slab so in-floor si not an option. I'd love to have the Velodyne SC-IW but it's a bit more costly than I wanted. I do like the IC and am considering it against staring with a 2 x 15" IB set-up that I can later expand to 4.

Once again, approval form the design team boss is the biggest hurdle.

If you have the space on the other side in a storage room or something, an IB should satisfy any design team! . I have never been a fan of subs, either boxes or tubes, in a room. My infinite baffle sub looks like just another air return grate. It's completely stealthy.

I built my manifold to hold two 15" speakers with the option to remove it and cut two more holes for a four 15" speaker mount. I have had no reason to consider upgrading it, the dual 15" speakers do the job well enough in my room.
