Which player: PS3 or the Sony BDP-S300?

I want to get rid of my Samsung, it doesn't play discs well at all, some I can't even watch. So, it's time for a new player, the most inexpensive one I can find, so far that's either of these. Best Buy has them both for $399 and I have a 20% off coupon good for this weekend.

I would go for the PS3, if I were you. And if you didn't have that 20% off coupon, I would've suggested waiting til next week to see if the rumored $100 price cut won't happen. Of course, you could also go for Sony's own $100-back deal w/ purchase at their own store (or online site) w/ a new Sony credit card -- and I actually wonder if that deal won't still be in effect after the price cut...

This may explain a flyer I got in the mail today offering what appears to be a Sony BDP-S300 (pic is small, no reference number given) offered for a special sale Feb. 1 and 2 for <$300 at a regional electronics outlet.

And I thought I was just getting a deal because they valued me as a customer ; ).

PS3; I had a 300 before my PS3 and the PS3 beats it hand down in every aspect except no DTS MA decoding - yet. That's why I say the PS3, it is far more "future proof" than the 300. Just my .02.

I doubt Best Buy will allow you to use that 20% off coupon a PS3 (BB still classifies the PS3 as a video game console, not a blu-ray player). But please report back if you are successful in using the 20% off coupon on a PS3 purchase.

PS3 without a doubt.

We'll see Patrick.

On the face of the coupon all it says is "20% off all Blu-ray disc and HD-DVD players. On the back, "Excludes Pioneer Elite, Xbox 360 HD-DVD players" and some other mumbo-jumbo.

The Xbox 360 is a gaming consol that also plays HD-DVDs but it is specifically excluded. Plus the "all" blu-ray players on the face of the coupon, as I see it just because the PS3 is a gaming consol it still plays Blu-ray discs, it falls under the "all". I shouldn't have a problem, but I'll also make a big stink about it if I do get some resistance.

PS3, good price and loads blu rays substantially faster not to mention the DVD upconversion is excellent. After I got a PS3 I sold my Samsung blu ray player. The only other player I would even consider is the pioneer elite.

Good deal, thanks for the input. I'm hitting up BB tomorrow and am going to pick it up. I'm also picking up a new LCD wallmount TV so I'll move the Sammy from the theater to the livingroom for the new TV.

Re: Which player: PS3 or the Sony BDP-S300?

I have the S300, and I'm happy with the picture and sound quality. I had the Sammy BDP1000, and the Sony is definitely a better player.

Having said that, if I were in the market for a new BD player today, I'd probably pick up the PS3 for its quick loading times(the 300 can take awhile on some discs), and for its near guaranteed compatibility with 1.1 and 2.0.

Isn't if funny how you know you will...even though the coupon seems pretty darn clear?!

Give 'em hell, Ron! Take no prisoners!

He probably picked up some PS3 game with his new toy--like the newest version of Halo--and hasn't come up for air yet!

Re: Which player: PS3 or the Sony BDP-S300?

I hooked it up last night in the theater and spun a little Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the only game I bought. Wow, is it a lot of fun. I also played some Sunshine, something my Samsung player would not do.

I am very impressed with this player...and the gaming is fun too. The last gaming system I owned was Intellivision.

Re: Which player: PS3 or the Sony BDP-S300?

Yeah, the Playstation 3 is a great player (I hope I get mine back soon ), but Intellivision...now that is a gaming machine. Mine still works to this day!

They take the coupon without any problem?

I have heard reports both ways. One guy said one store refused, so he went to another one and they did it. YMMV

Probably goes without saying, but make sure you update it to the latest firmware (v 2.10).

Re: Which player: PS3 or the Sony BDP-S300?

As far as the PS3 goes I have a question. Is it the 80 gig PS3 only that upconverts , and not the 40 gig? And , is the upconversion on the 80 gig really that good? I've only seen 1 post in this thread commenting on the quality of the upconversion and I'd like to hear some more. I have a lot of standard dvds and quality upconversion is a HUGE selling point for me.

Re: Which player: PS3 or the Sony BDP-S300?

Every PS3 ever made upconverts. As to the quality of upconvert the general concensus is that the PS3 is one of the better.

Re: Which player: PS3 or the Sony BDP-S300?

Thats good to know. The only reason I questioned this is because of what I read in another thread here in the HD section. Someone asked about using the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player in their theater and it was stated that, yes, it should work fine as long as you don't need upconversion for dvds. Thats why I was asking. I will definately keep it in mind. I want to wait and see what kind of reviews the Panasonic BD50 gets.

Hehheh. The context of that Q&A was for analog component video output, not HDMI. They all upconvert via HDMI, but not via component out, which is how nearly all upconverting players work.

Re: Which player: PS3 or the Sony BDP-S300?

My mistake. I misread the thread. I do have a question though , since you seem to have considerable knowledge on upconversion and hd in general. My projector (Sanyo PLV 60HT) is about 5 years old and of course, does not have HDMI inputs. S-video and component only. I do want to upgrade my current dvd player to a Blu-Ray by the end of the year , but don't really want to get rid of the projector as of yet. So, since I will not be able to upconvert without HDMI , will I see any kind of improvement playing my SD dvd's on a Blu-Ray player? Or will they pretty much look the same as they do on my current dvd player?

Re: Which player: PS3 or the Sony BDP-S300?

How does the PS3 compare to the Sony 500? I would love to get the PS3, but I really want analog audio outputs, as my receiver does not have HDMI connections, and I do not plan on getting a new one anytime soon.

Thanks
