I've tried several of those labeling kits that come with software disc and paper accessories but I've never been satisfied with use. Anyone know of a stand-alone label printed that will give good results and not too expensive and easy to operate?

Re: Labeling DVDs?
You mean creating labels that actually go on the DVD?I use to do that and stopped the practice. The stickers just don't work over time and start to come off or damage the disc. They will even make the disc spin unbalanced if not applied perfectly.
The best bet is to start buying Inkjet Printable DVD-Rs and to get an Inkjet printer that will print on them. The best printer for the price that will do this is the Epson R380. Amazon.com: Epson Stylus Photo R380 Inkjet Printer: Electronics
I have one of the previous model R300s and it is still going strong after 4 years. It comes with their Epson CD Print software which will allow you to create cover art to be printed on the disc. It works extremely well.
The Inkjet DVD-R media can be found easier online at places like Americal.com.
Americal.com DVD-R Inkjet printable Media
There are discs with white tops (best for full color printing). And discs with silver tops.
Of course there are also CD-Rs that are inkjet printable too.
There is no better way to make a CD-R or DVD-R look more professional that this low price point. There is no sticker to come off or have to apply and the top of the discs are specially designed to accept the ink and not smear, etc...
