Pet peeves on the forum...

Thread Starter
It's just happened again, as it has many thousands of times before.
I read the first post in a thread, then the second post quotes the ENTIRE first post.
Why?
It's beyond tedious. Did the respondant think we wouldn't know what he was referring to?
Also I find the "quoting" of photos to be usually unneeded and space consuming.
When I do quote someone's text I try to edit it down the the bone.

I tried to find a previous appropriate thread to add this to (NOT trying is another pet peeve) but there seems to have been a spring cleaning here.

Thanks for letting me vent for a moment.

D'OH! I just remembered what the next poster here will do.
Well, I asked for that.

Why, whatever do you mean?

Seriously, I agree with you. I've seen some extremely long posts quoted when it wasn't really necessary.

And then the quoter adds just a one-line reply. Those are the best.

Thankfully, I don't see that being as much of a problem here as it is on other boards.

Of course, there's also the opposite problem - someone doesn't quote any of the post he/she is responding to and you can't figure out what they're talking about.

I agree with Scott completely. I'll never order the broccoli here again either.

What he said goes for me too!

Re: Pet peeves on the forum...

posts like this one that add nothing to the discussion.

"This film sucks big time. Even in HD."

Re: Pet peeves on the forum...

This is a great thread. I have not laughed this hard for awhile. Since we're talking pet peeves on the forum, here's mine: A person will post a question here and at some point in the thread some uber genius will post a reply two to three paragraphs long simply to tell the OP to be more specific in his question. At the same time not remotely answering the question the OP initially inquired about.

Re: Pet peeves on the forum...

Unfortunately, the quoting feature (built into the forum software that this and many other sites use) is not sophisticated, and doesn't encourage posters to edit quotes. If it would let you easily select and quote portions of previous posts, and to do so from multiple posters, I think this would be less of a problem. But it's default behavior is to quote the whole post; so that's what people do.

I also hate it when people use TLAs I don't know, like "QFT"

...or, like "TLA"s!

I honestly don't know what either stand for!

And, Tony, I agree 100%. I thought that remark (and others like it) amount to nothing more than being rude to the people who are discussing the film/DVD.

Re: Pet peeves on the forum...

Flufferdoodle says it's the Tabby Liaison Association, not to be confused with some other 3 letter acronym.

This one got me (though I knew QFT, so I'm batting .500).

According to Acronym Finder (useful site, BTW), TLA=Three Letter Acronym or Three Letter Abbreviation, along with four pages of unrelated possibilities (Texas Library Association, anyone?).

I also hate it when people quote themselves! j/k (stands for "Just Kidding" btw).

I agree. I bet many members know how to quote the whole post but not portions of it. There are some features I don't know how to use properly either. I still have problems posting pictures. I can do it. I just have no idea what thread they're going to wind up in! So if you see a picture pop up outta nowhere, it's probably mine! Maybe a "How do I do this?" sticky thread on top of the Basics forum would help.

Re: Pet peeves on the forum...

TLA = Three Letter Acronyms (although I can see the cat's POV )

QFT = Quote for Truth? New one to me. Is that like phrase I hear the kids say these days: "True that"?
