New Receiver - Need Ideas

Thread Starter
I got started with my home theater four and a half years ago with the following speakers and receiver:
JBL S312 II 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker with 12" Woofer (250W Peak) x 4
JBL 3-Way Dual 5-1/4" Center Channel Speaker (150 W Peak)
JBL S120P II 12" 400-Watt Front-Firing Powered Subwoofer
Harman Kardon AVR 525

Well, a couple months ago, the HK died on me, and the certified service center said they replaced everything that was replaceable but it still wouldn't work.

So, I need to buy a new receiver.

I've looked at the Yamaha RX-V861, but my HDTV doesn't have any HDMI inputs... Does anyone know about this receiver? Can I connect my cable box to it using the HDMI connection, then it to my TV using the component cables without losing anything? I have read that some receivers can only upconvert using the HDMI output with the HDMI input, so would this receiver upconvert using the component inputs with the component outputs?

I also looked at the Onkyo TX SR805 but the description I read says nothing about DTS decoding, and the reviews say it consumes a lot of power even in standby and generates excessive heat.

Anyway, if anyone has any answers to these questions or could maybe recommend a different model to look into, in the $700 to $800 price range that would hopefully last longer than 4 and a half years, I would be sincerely grateful.

Thanks in advance

Re: New Receiver - Need Ideas

The 861 is a great rcvr. As far as the connections go just run component from your cable box to the rcvr. PQ will only be slightly better if not the same with HDMI coming from the HD cable box. I wouldn't use HDMI unless I "had" to. In this case you don't have to. IMHO HDMI is overrated, unless you have a BR/HDDVD player, it's not needed.
