I didn't even know there was a second release, and neither did DVD Compare, it seems. The only anamorphic version they list is the R4, which seems kind of hard to find...

Re: Hilary and Jackie anamorphic?
I have the Region 2 (UK) VCI edition with catalogue number VCD0017 shown on the spine. Rather confusingly, the actual disc shows a different number, VFC13589. This version is anamorphic. The only copyright year shown is for the packaging design, and this is 1999. I don't know when this edition was actually released though - it could well have been later than 1999. I bought it only about a year ago.Incidentally, the Region 1 edition should be avoided at all costs. Not only is it a very poor transfer but also it has two cuts, one of which is a significant cut in the sequence where Jacqueline's parents are visiting her in her apartment when her illness is already quite advanced and she can no longer play the cello. As far as I recall, it is also non-anamorphic, but, in any case, its other drawbacks put it out of contention. The Region 2 transfer is fine.
