Front page "News" problems

Thread Starter
Recently I've been having problems with the Flash based news section on HTF's main page. The problems range from the links not working to it not being displayed properly. When it isn't working properly I'll get the backgrounds, Top New, New Releases, The Buzz, and the buttons but there will be no articles or pictures. The different states of functionality are due to different machines/browsers.

I've tried accessing it on three machines, with XP-64, XP home, and Vista 32 respectively. I've also tried accessing the site in both internet explorer and firefox with each machine. I'm unable to access the links/section on any of them with either browser.

I've flash installed in all cases. I'm not sure if this is just a local problem, or if others are having issues as well. If it's just me, is there anywhere I can access the news items with traditional links?

Re: Front page "News" problems

Let me see if we can get a fix. It might take a while. There
have been administrative changes over there and we are not quite
sure who is running the campaigns over there.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Re: Front page "News" problems

For me, the news thing works...and it doesn't work. On my XP Vaio, it works fine. On my (ugh) Vista it doesn't.

What would be great for that window is if, when clicked, it opened in a new tab or browser.

For the record, I have had many problems with flash based stuff on my Toshiba with (ugh) vista.

Re: Front page "News" problems

We will have to talk with Home Media Retailing about this.

Another thing to try is to make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player and Java on your computer to see if that makes a difference.

Re: Front page "News" problems

I've the latest flash in all instances. For Firefox I even tried both the normal Firefox instillation and directly downloading it from Adobe's site. Just fyi.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Just to bring you guys up-to-date....

Home Media Retail is working on the banner as we speak.

The problem is, they stopped supporting it months ago
when they switched to a "screener room" format that you
can check out on their site.

They have agreed to do what they can to get the links working
again. Hopefully the flash banner will be fully operational within
a few days.

Re: Front page "News" problems

It appears to be working again for me at work using IE 6.0. I will check out Opera, IE and Firefox when I get home.

Re: Front page "News" problems

doesnt work on firefox or safari.
guess it's a pointless feature to still have on the main page.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Clicking on the New Release "folder" tab also does absolutely nothing.

Re: Front page "News" problems

The latest I have heard from them is that it will work with Firefox, Opera and IE 6 but it doesn't work with IE 7+.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Parker: I'm using Firefox & XP on two different computers and it doesn't work for me.

**EDIT: I can get the stories to come up this morning. Couldn't last night. But "New Releases" still does nothing for me.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Basically I think we have come to a dead end as
far as the main page banner is concerned.

Home Media Retail no longer supports the banner,
though they are quite surprised that news still appears
within it.

The question now is whether to keep it up despite its
lack of link functionality.

Perhaps you guys can help us decide.

Re: Front page "News" problems

well it does provide news.
maybe the un-clickable links should be removed and just use the banner as a headline news notice.

on the other hand I get all that news in email updates several times a week from the banners web site.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Is there a way for us to "get to" the stories that show up there as headlines?

For example, a day or so ago there was a completely intriguing and interesting story that I wanted to read more about...but even though I clicked on the banner about three-jillion times, it didn't work!

But if there was a way to link to a home page for home media retailing...or a "news" page...where we could access the whole story after seeing the blurb/headline that shows up in the banner...THAT would be cool.

Re: Front page "News" problems

maybe a link to HomeMediaMagazine.com | Bringing Digital Entertainment To You in there somewhere.

Mike:

We are working on it for sure.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Well, I guess a change has been made.

Looks good...and works!

Too bad the news isn't a little more specific to the hobby. Seems like mostly celebrity news right now.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Mike,

As I am certain you realize, the HMR banner was very
specific to the world of DVD.

There is only so much that could be done with a more
"generalized" news banner, but Parker was very careful
about adding only entertainment news to it.

Re: Front page "News" problems

I am going to see what can be done about adding consumer electronics to the information. That was not a selectable option but should be.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Sorry guys, I just have to say this HTF Forum "News Feed" is REALLY lame! It's all just lite news and entertainment clips from other news sources and the majority of it is fluff and of little interest I think to people viewing and posting on these forums.

I'm quite frankly rather shocked with Home Theater Forum. I can get this "stuff" practically anywhere. I will truly miss some of the interesting columns and more industry related coverage that was posted regularly.

I hope this isn't part of a trend!

Re: Front page "News" problems

yea i have to say that even if we couldnt click a link in the old news thing at least you could see news items and go to the we site and read them if you wanted.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Charles and Tony:

I wanted to find something to change out the HMR information as the links weren't working is most people's browsers. HMR offered no replacement for something that did work.

If you know of any feeds that I could use to replace this with let me know.

Re: Front page "News" problems

nothing i know of.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Sorry to hear of the problems. I must admit I've had similar issues with the links myself in the past.

Like Tony I'm at a loss for alternatives for now. I would almost prefer nothing in that place now or something else entirely (new flashes from manufacturer's websites? beats me.).

Re: Front page "News" problems

Parker: I like the way you've re-formatted the news links from the top banner to the left-hand column of the portal page.

The way it was originally formatted was really bogging down the load time of the portal page and getting to the point was I was contemplating switching to the index page to make my way into the HTF. This new way doesn't slow things down at all and the page loads quickly.

I'm still not sure how useful it is to forum members...but that's for a different discussion another day.

Anyway, I don't know if you had heard any complaints about the load times, but this seems like a definite improvement over the way things were. Thanks.

As always thanks for the feedback. Home Media Magazine is trying to put something together that will replace what we used before. Keep your fingers crossed that they can put something together.

Parker: I've got to change the content of that last post. For some reason now, the loading of the News stuff in the last banner of the Portal Page is slowing things down.

For example, when I enter the HTF via the Portal Page it takes several seconds for the content of the News section to load...during which time I cannot navigate and have to wait until all the content loads before I can head off to my UserCP page.

Re: Front page "News" problems

Mike:

I noticed it is taking a while to load. Must be a server issue on their end. Home Media Magazine is working on getting is something to replace the one that they had before. Hopefully they will get it working.
