Blockbuster BluRay only?

So I paid my local Blockbuster a visit the other day. Since I haven't been there in a while I inquired about HD DVD/BluRay rentals. The clerk informed me that they will have BluRay discs in the March/April timeframe. I asked what about the other format. She said "no, just BluRay."

Anyone else have a similar experience at BB or any other brick and mortar store?

One other thing...

I went to Blockbuster because I found out my favorite store (Hollywood video) was no longer renting, liquidating their inventory and will be closing. I now have one rental outlet. And with the way things are going for BB I suspect within the next year there will be zero.

Re: Blockbuster BluRay only?

I do the $20.00 per month unlimited rental at BB. Last fall they started having one rack of Bluray movies. I chose BB over Netflix because they allow us to trade in at the store. Used to be unlimited trade-ins, but they changed it to only 5 per month. This Jan they rearranged the whole store and now it looks like they have half of all the shelves. I am beginning to wonder about BBs future also.

Re: Blockbuster BluRay only?

I can't remember when, but Blockbuster announced a long time ago that they would only carry Blu-ray discs and not HD-DVD's. At the time, that was seen as a big victory for the Blu-ray camp, but it doesn't really seem like it made much of an impact. I haven't been to a BB in a while, so I'm not sure what quantity of Blu-ray's they carry (if any).

And Netflix is good, except I have an extremely hard time getting any newer Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs. Maybe it's just my local facility, but I've got 13 HD movies in my queue, and only 4 are available "Now" (and they're all older films).

Yeah, that's really old news that Blockbuster was Blu-ray only. Though the few stores that had HD DVD would continue to carry it.

Regarding Netflix, despite saying "long wait" my Blu-rays usually ship out pretty fast. Haven't seen much difference between them and new release DVDs. Your best bet is always to time your returns the same as the new release dates.

Does BB actually offer BDs for the monthly unlimited rental thing? If it does, then I'll finally go check out my local BB again.

Re: Blockbuster BluRay only?

Blu Ray is included in the Total Choice plan both in the store and in the mail. I've gotten them through both methods.

I don't have a bluray player yet, but as David Rubenstein stated, they are included. I added one to my queue with no troubles or extra charges. (I did take it back out) It looks like they have about 300 titles to choose from.

Not really.

I was a Netflix subscriber back when they first started and it didn't work for me. I couldn't get the new releases for weeks. So I would still go to the local BB every Tuesday at lunch to get the new releases (which is the majority of my viewing) as a result I wasn't using Netflix as much as I should. Then there are those occasions where you just want to watch a certain movie NOW.

I am at the place right now where I am reconsidering a Netflix subscription but the BB deal that allows me to exchange in-store is very tempting.

Regardless, I am of the opinion that the brick and mortar stores are, unfortunately, a dying breed.
