(I can see Atonement winning. Though I havetn seen it yet, it seems like the type of film that can and has been picked before)

(This is a sure thing)

There are films I like on the nom list, but it's tough to generate any real enthusiasm this year. Even to guess at winners. Without the director nod, I have trouble seeing Atonement beat No Country, though I could see dark horse Michael Clayton walking away with some wins.

And does the Academy love George Clooney or what?

Just my quick thoughts:

Atonement's BP chances are dead in the water with no Editing nomination. But Joe Wright got jobbed out of a Director's nomination (I'd put him in over Jason Reitman). It's looking like a 2-horse race between No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood for BP, director, adapted screenplay. (but I think No Country for Old Men sweeps all 3, maybe PTA gets best director, but doubtful).

DDL is a shoo-in for Best Actor (though it looks like Emile Hirsch got snubbed over Tommy Lee Jones).

Javier Bardem is a shoo-in for Best Supporting Actor

Julie Christie and Marion Cotillard are the 2 frontrunning Best Actress noms (Angelina Jolie got snubbed).

Amy Ryan and Tilda Swinton are the frontrunners for Best Supporting Actress noms.

Agreed. Not only does it have no editing nom, but I believe only two films have won BP without a directing nom (Grand Hotel, Driving Miss Daisy), so it's a VERY long shot.

I'm surprised Wright got snubbed and Reitman got a nomination. I was expecting Penn or Wright. I would be surprised at Gilroy's nom if it wasn't for the DGA.

Your view may change once you've seen it. It's the kind of film that gets nominated but doesn't win.

Great to see PTA get his nominations.

DDL is a lock.

Glad Sarah Polley got a nomination.

I feel sorry for Gordon Pinsent. He's been snubbed at every award and I think he was even better than Julie Christie in Away From Her.

the funny thing about Atonement, There Will be Blood and No Country for Old Men is that they all have third acts that turn people off a movie they were pretty passionate about watching the first two parts of it. which makes the race interesting for Juno and Michael Clayton.

I don't think Atonement is totally dead, but it is pretty much dead. on the other hand. Rules, like that a BP winner must have an editing nomination, are made to be broken.

Julian Shnable could very well become the first director to win without a best picture nomination. though I imagine the coen brothers may very well be awarded a career oscar or PTA could be acknowledged. but if the academy sees the film, few voters will be able to not vote for him. Highly likely to win editing as well.

Best Actor is a foregone conclusion for Day Lewis (unless there's major backlash...)
as is best Supporting Actor (can't imagine a backlash against Bardem)
Cate Blanchett is probably walking away easy with the Supporting actress trophy, though anyone could legitimately win this
Leading actress, it's Julie Christie's to lose

Ratatouille will probably win Animated film easily, no Spirited Away situation this year for persepolis.

Atonement will probably win best score

Elizabeth best costume design.

I don't think any other category is especially predictable.

Just wondering why the previous thread was closed because it covered ALL awards not just the Oscars!

The previous thread should have been kept open for the other awards and a new thread started just for the Academy Awards, IMHO.

I was surprised THE SIMPSONS MOVIE wasn't nominated instead of SURF'S UP. It got great reviews, was a huge hit, and being 2-D animation, not the norm lately.

This isn't quite true, though you have to go waaay back to show otherwise.

- Lewis Milestone won "Comedy" director in the Award's first year (1927-28) for the un-nominated for BP "Two Arabian Knights" (King Vidor won the "Drama" directing award in the only year they were split).

- Frank Lloyd won director for the un-nominated for BP "The Divine Lady" (1928-29).

bah, very few posts not by me at the other thread anyway, it covered all awards but there was minimal discussion. This is probably less confusing.

best director winning: wow. I had no idea that they'd won without BP nominations. but bP was wierd those first three-four ceremonies, so it's not quite as surprising.

I would pick There Will be Blood to win at this point (the only one I've not seen) it's score was DQed at the last second by the notoriously cranky Music division (can't allow rockstars to write 'our' music) and I think the Art Direction nomination is more significant than the sound one that No Country got in it's place. It's a very thin margin and it could go in any of five directions at this point, though i think Michael Clayton is probably the least likely to win the BP.

4 of the 10 screenplay nominations were written by women. That's awesome.
Most nominations ever for a Pixar film (tying Aladdin for second for most nominations for an animated films)
Roger Deakens is the first person in a very long time to receive two cinematography nominations in one year. And probably the only time it has happened when limited to only five choices (there were periods when there were more nominees or separate color and BW categories)
Ruby Dee garners two trivia bits, shortest performance/screentime ever nominated and second oldest female nominee.
Hal Holbrook is the oldest male nominee
Roger Deakens has never won and now has 7 nominations in cinematography with 57% of those coming from Coen Brothers films: Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Man Who Wasn't There and No Country for Old Men (his other nominations were Kundun, Shawshank Redemption and Assassination of Jesse James)

Big props to Brad Bird and Pixar for Ratatouille. I cannot remember an animated feature with so many nominations in different categories (Beauty and the Beast had 6 but 3 were in the Original Song category). Well deserved recognition for the reigning king of animation.

An interesting set of noms to cap off an interesting year. My thoughts, for what it's worth (which is not much):

BP: First off, let me say these are 5 damn good films. One of Oscar's best final groups, IMO. Right now, I think it's NCfOM's to lose. Atonement is very weak without the other noms (Editing, Director, Actress) to support it. TWbB is a cantakerous masterpiece that will likely not get much support among the Academy's older, more conservative voters. MC is obviously a much-admired film, and a stellar example of old-school Hollywood craftsmanship. But in the end, it doesn't scream "Best Picture". That leaves Juno, which is ironically the "dark horse" here, because in a group of very dark films it is the one ray of light. But in the end, I think the film that is the best of 2007 (IMO), No Country For Old Men, takes it.

Actor: I was glad to see the (deserved) noms for Mortensen & Jones, but this is Lewis' all the way.

Actress: I love Cate, but she should not have been nominated for E:TGA. It was an overripe performance in an overripe film. I would have preferred to see Amy Adams here for her luminous turn in Enchanted. Oh well, makes no difference, as this will surely go to Christie.

Supp. Actor: This is a strong, strong field. Gotta go with Bardem, but Holbrook could play spoiler.

Supp. Actress: No surprises here. The race is between Ryan and Blanchett. Let's go with Ryan.

Director: Gotta go with the Coens here. Anderson is IMO the most likely spoiler.

Animated: What the hell is Surf's Up doing here?? It's just cannon fodder for the other two. Ratatouille will cook up a win here.

Score: A big to the Music branch for NOT nominating Jonny Greenwood's brilliant score for There Will Be Blood. (I now understand it was DQ'd at the last minute. My stands.) The race here is probably between Ratatouille & Atonement, with the latter likely taking the prize.

And that's all for now.

I've yet to see No Country For Old Men. But Casey Affleck's phenomenal Robert Ford seems all but forgotten in favor of Javier Bardem or even Hal Holbrook. Really strange.

I would have expected Into the Wild to get a Screenplay nom.

I loved Juno but I am unsure what part of it was so wonderfully directed. I would have put... The Bourne Ultimatum in there instead.

Someone forgot to list the Editing noms in the original post.

Here are my reactions to the nominees:

Surprises:

Tommy Lee Jones for "In the Valley of Elah"
- His performance in this didn't get too much buzz

Cate Blanchett for "Elizabeth: The Golden Age"
- She was great in this, but her name rarely came up in discussions after the movie was released

No Angelina Jolie for "A Mighty Heart"
- She was considered a lock for Best Actress

Ruby Dee for "American Gangster"
- I believe she was nominated by the SAG, but I wasn't confident she'd make it since her part was relatively small

"The Golden Compass" for anything
- I didn't think the movie was too bad, but I assumed the Academy would likely ignore it

Jason Reitman for directing "Juno"
- Usually the small indie movie that gets nominated for Best Pic gets ignored for its directing (which usually allows a more artsy director to slip in - this year "Atonement" got bumped out)

Things I'm happy about (pleasant surprises)

Viggo Mortensen for "Eastern Promises"
- I was hoping they wouldn't ignore his work like they did for "A History of Violence"

"Ratatouille" for original score
- I was worried the Academy might not recognize Michael Giacchino, who was robbed of a nomination for "The Incredibles"

Things I'm angry about:

It's now "Academy Award Nominated 'Norbit'"
