speaker materials

Thread Starter
I have narrowed the surround speakers for my HT down to either the sonance symphony s625t and the speakercraft cinema dipole/aim wide. I am looking for information of the differences in speaker construction. The sonance have beryllium dome tweeters and beryllium cones. The speakercrafts have Aluminum dome tweeters and kevlar cones. How do these different materials affect sound quality and reliability? The receiver used for these will be either the integra dtr8.8 or denon 4308.

Re: speaker materials

Have you auditioned them? IMO I don't care if they are made of paper, kevlar, or whatever. Sound is the most important thing to me. The only driver I check to see what material it's made from is the tweeter.

And those AIM Wides are awesome.

Re: speaker materials

For the woofer, the crossover and cabinet construction have a larger impact than the cone material. For tweeters, hard domes like aluminum, titanium, etc, have been know to be more crisp sounding. In a poor design, they can even sound harsh and shrill. Soft fabric tweeters like silk can have a more laid back, mellow sound. I'm using speaker with silk dome tweeters now but the ones I am building have aluminum domes. I like the sound of both equally. It's just that they sound different. That's why it is best to audition speakers before buying.
