iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

Something I just noticed with my 1.1.3 upgrade....

When I delete mail off my iPhone, it also deletes it off
my mail server.

This never happened prior to 1.1.3 and I'm not happy about it
as I need the same access to those email messages when I
switch to my laptop and desktop.

Any suggestions?

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

Ron, you're using GMail, right?? A few months ago, GMail added IMAP capability. This is a different way to access your e-mail, and is recommended for those who are using multiple machines to access their mail. But the behavior is very different from POP (the protocol you have been using).

With 1.1.3, Apple changed the default GMail access on the iPhone from POP to IMAP. Apparently, this is also affecting existing setups (a mistake, IMHO). The following article explains it better than I can:

PC World - Google Warns of iPhone 1.1.3 IMAP Switch

And here's Google's page on the subject, with pointers to detailed information on IMAP and instructions to set your phone back to POP if you wish.

Attention iPhone POP users

Hope this helps!!

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

Well it sort of helps. Here are the instructions....

Quote:
If you're running software update 1.1.3, please note that tapping the 'Gmail' button will automatically configure Gmail IMAP. Here's how to set up POP:

Tap Mail from your iPhone's Home screen.
Tap Other.
Select POP from the tab menu.
Enter your name, your address, and password in the appropriate fields. The Address field should be your full email address (username@gmail.com).
Under Incoming Mail Server, fill in the Host Name field as 'pop.gmail.com'.
Under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), fill in the Host Name field as 'smtp.gmail.com'.
Tap Save. Now you're done!

The second step is Tap OTHER

What are they talking about?! I tap the MAIL icon from my home
screen and there is no OTHER option.

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

Ron, they are talking about creating a whole new account. Perhaps these instructions are for initial iPhone users that don't have any mail accounts configured. If you already have accounts, you need to go to (from the home screen) Settings/Mail/Add Account.../Other

I too think it was a mistake. It has been quite annoying. I my adjust to it and find it better, but now I find myself having to fix things. I am trying to get my Mail account to work with my revised iPhone account the way it used to.

Michael,

I take it I need to delete my current GMAIL account on the
iPhone and start over...yes?

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

Okay...

It looks like I fixed the problem (thanks Michael)

I deleted the current GMAIL account on my iPhone.

I then created a brand new POP3 account under mail
settings using the "other" option described above.

Incoming mail: pop.gmail.com

I used my own mail server for the outgoing address.

This seems to have fixed the problem. I am receiving all my
email and can readily delete it without worrying that it is also
being deleted off of the server.

One last thing...

Damn Iphone! Whose bright idea was it to screw this up?

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

Its not a screw up, you are misunderstanding the fundamental POINT of IMAP versus POP3. IMAP is designed from the start to synchronize accross all devices. Now, I agree, that making all previous POP3 accounts switch to IMAP would be really confusing to people, but I dont think thats what they did, they just made the default IMAP now.

Personally, IMAP was just what I've been wanting, and I'm REALLY happy to have it both in the crappy $20 Mail application and the free google tools.

My problem is different than yours tho, I have several gmail accounts and cant seem to figure out how to let mail know when I want to stop using one and switch to another. Is that not possible?

Sam,

Please excuse my ignorance on this matter.

I had no idea what IMAP is and based on your response
and several others, I now understand it better.

Actually, using IMAP would be the perfect way to manage
mail across all computers. I delete mail from one and it
does it for all.

In my case, the problem is that I usually download my mail
through the iPhone first. However, when I finally get to
responding it is done through my desktop. Therefor, I can't
readily delete mail on one platform for all platforms.

Well my previous POP3 account did get switched to IMAP and yes it was confusing (and I think a bit of a screw-up ). I am trying to decide if I am going to keep the IMAP functionality. I understand its benefits, but my mobile e-mail workflow is similar to Ron's and POP3 works well.

Why not? I do this all the time. I get my mail through the iPhone first, and I normally reply with Apple Mail. IMAP is what most iPhone users have been waiting for, and it's a big step forward.

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

CJ,

Explain this IMAP to me a little more in depth. Perhaps
I can take advantage of it.

Am I correct in assuming this......

1. I can download the same mail on my iPhone, my desktop
and my laptop. If it downloads to one, I get the same mail
on all devices.

2. However, if I delete any email message on any one of my
devices it deletes it from all the others?

So therefor....

I can get the same mail downloaded to all 3 of my devices
just as long as I don't start deleting it off of any one device.

Am I correct?

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

Yes, Ron. The easiest way to take advantage of IMAP under your existing workflow would simply be to wait until you've replied to an email on your desktop. Because deleting an email from any one device (including your desktop) also deletes it from the server, if you wait and delete it from your desktop after replying it will also be conveniently removed from your iPhone.

However, if you archive all of your important emails on your desktop like I do, it might still not make sense to go the IMAP route. My advice would be to stick with POP if that's already working good for you.

Yep, that's it. I love it because when I read the mail on *any* device, it's marked READ, because *I* already read it. It doesn't matter which device I read it on. It sort of makes your email device independent. There's nothing to synchronize, you never have to open up your multiple email applications or devices to get them all caught up. As soon as you do anything to any of the emails, through any device (read, reply, delete), the same is mirrored to all devices.

I never knew how awesome IMAP was until I started using it on the iPhone a month ago. Now that it's the default for Gmail, I wonder how I ever used POP for so long

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

I'm sort of leaning going IMAP because it allows me to delete
messages across all platforms at once.

The problem I have is that I download to my iPhone first and
then opt to respond on my Desktop later. After all, typing a long
reply on the iPhone is a real nuisance.

I'll have to think about whether I can do this effectively using IMAP.

I do this every day, so you should be able to as well. What mail app do you use, Mail, or Thunderbird?

CJ,

I use Apple Mail.

However, all of it is routed through GMAIL which forwards my
Home Theater Forum and secondary email accounts to my iPhone
and Apple Mail. I do this to remove spam that the iPhone cannot.

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

When you login to gmail via the web, what do new emails look like, regular unread emails? I figure once in Gmail, it doesn't matter if the email originated in a POP system. I could be wrong, but it makes sense to me. You could send a couple test emails and try it out, so you don't lose anything important.

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

CJ,

Looks like any other web-based email.

It gives you a list of your email messages sorted in
an INBOX and filtered SPAM box. Checkboxes next to
each mail let you delete one-by-one or a mass deletion by group.

I had to use GMAIL because it is the only way to filter
spam from my iPhone.

Re: iPhone 1.1.3 deleting mail off my server? WTF?

I bet it would be no different, the emails would likely be forwarded properly, with all the benefits of IMAP. Try setting it up and sending/deleting a few test emails.
