Looking for center channel to complete system

Hi everyone, just became a member here. I was a member of another HT forum about a year ago, but left it for a while and then couldn't find it again lol. Anyway, introductions aside...

I'm looking for a center channel speaker to complete my 5.1 home theater in my basement. The system is nothing major as I'm only a college student on a tight budget. I've pieced it together over the years from a combination of purchased equipment, stuff lying around the house, and DIY stuff. My current setup is:

Receiver: Pioneer VSX-815

Front speakers: Some homemade ones my Dad built when he was in high school. Don't laugh, they still sound great IMO. I have no idea what's in them other than 10" woofers from a jukebox and some horns. They really do sound good, though!!

Rear speakers: Some older Vector Research speakers. Can't remember the model number.

Sub: DIY passive radiator setup with Dayton 12" driver and 8" PR. Powered by a 350 watt Rhythmik Audio amp.

I'm looking for a good center channel speaker with a voice that will blend nicely with the rest of my "random" setup. Doesn't have to be the most expensive/top model since I'm on a budget, but I don't want to buy crap. I have a pretty good sense of what's good quality; I really enjoy both home and car audio. The system is used mostly for gaming, but also handles music and movies for the basement. Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

Re: Looking for center channel to complete system

Hi Donnie. Welcome to HTF!

Well you have 2 choices:

- Look at the tweeter and mid-range driver on those speakers your dad built. Try to find a center speaker with similar size & type of drivers.

- Go audition sets like Klipsch Pro Monitors, DefTech ProCinema, Polk RM series and decide on your next set. Then try and find someone on CraigsList selling the odd speakers of that set. Build things up slowly.

Actually - Craigslist often carries older-but-decent speakers that people have sitting around and want to get rid of.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome and suggestions! The speakers my dad built actually just have the 10" woofers and the horns in them...no midrange drivers.

Craigslist is a great idea, I never even thought of buying used stuff. I'll give that a look.
