I have a Toshbia A-2 HD-DVD player hooked up via HDMI to my Onkyo 605. It's weird because when I set the audio format to bitstream it still doesn't show, it shows Digital PCM. I thought when I got Transformers on HD-DVD it would have some awesome sound, it's pretty pathetic actually. It seems as thought my PS3 (also connected via HDMI) has better sound. Does anyone know the proper way to set up my A-2 with my Onkyo? Is there something that I'm missing? I've posted before but I only got one response! Someone help!

Check out p.53 of your manual.
There's no "Bitstream" setting for the HDMI output. If set to "Auto", it will send legacy DD/DTS as a bitstream (which will be displayed as such on your AVR), but will decode everything else (core only for DTS-HD) and send as PCM. If HDMI is set to "PCM", then even DD/DTS are decoded and sent as PCM.
The A2 cannot send a TrueHD or DTS-HD MA bitstream to an AVR, so you won't see those lights on your 605.

Re: Onkyo 605 and Toshiba A-2 Question
Everything Jack said is correct (per usual). I'll just add that the only HD DVD players that will "Light the TrueHD light" on the Onkyo are the A35 and the XA2. But you really should not be concerned because although some people claim to hear a difference, the sound via decoding in the player vs. the sound via decoding in the receiver should (theoretically) be the same. For the A2 hooked up to the 506, your audio settings should be the following:
HDMI Audio - Auto
SPDIF Audio - PCM
The Onkyo should show "Multichannel PCM" in the display, and the A2 will show the current chosen codec (DD+/TrueHD, etc.) in an information window when you hit the "display" button.
Re: Onkyo 605 and Toshiba A-2 Question
Thanks guys, I've tried the setting and it sounds a little better. It seems as though I have to turn up my Onkyo a little more with my A-2 than my PS3 to get the same sound. Is that normal? It also seems that the DD+ is definitely not as good as the DDTHD. Is there anyone out there that can describe the difference to me without it going too far over my head? Thanx!
