Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

Less than two hours to go. Here are pics of the early morning queue from TUAW:

The Keynote Line - The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

And here's Fake Steve's typically hilarious take on it:

The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs: The madness begins

"Nice hair, Morrissey."

One of these years I've gotta go to Macworld...

Oh yeah, the online Apple Store is already down.

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

You know, a year ago I wouldn't have given a shit
about a MacWorld Keynote address. Today I am like
a giddy school kid sitting and awaiting Steve Jobs to
take the podium.

Over the course of this year I have become
such a Mac nerd that it's not even funny. Since January
'07 I bought a Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, iPod and iPhone.

I converted no less than 4 co-workers to Mac recently
and all of them have been thankful.

...and despite the fact some people find the need to say I "drank
the Kool-aid," I have never been more confident about anything
than my stand on never going back to a PC!

I have always liked Mac Rumors' coverage if you can't view a live video feed and this year they have a special iPhone page setup.

Except that Apple doesn't do a live feed. Their video won't be available until this afternoon.

Agreed, as they do the auto-update thing. No mashing on the refresh button!

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

First new product announce: Time Capsule - an Airport Extreme/hard drive combo. Basically an Apple NAS for Time Machine. I don't think any of the rumor mills got this.

$300 for 500 GB, $500 for a terabyte. I'm buying one of these!

Nope. This is new! Pretty cool.

Full Airport Extreme base station with "server grade" internal
hard drive. 2 versions: 500 GB version $299; 1TB $499

On to iPhone. Lots of stats. SDK still coming in Feb. New software update today - basically same thing that was leaked last week.

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

Excellent! Software update available TODAY. Going to do that
right after the Keynote. It will of course take away my jailbreak,
but these new features are well worth that loss until the phone
can be jailbroken again.

Craig, I'll let you continue the coverage. THANK YOU!

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

Just announced an update to the iPod Touch, makes it more iPhone like. Added: Mail, Maps, Notes, Stocks, Weather. There will be a $20 charge for this update. Let the whining begin...

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

And we're on to the 3rd thing (of 4): iTunes. Here's the expected announce of movie rentals.

Wow! Impressive list of studios: Touchstone, Miramax, MGM, Lionsgate, New Line, Fox, WB, Disney, Paramount, Universal, Sony

Initially over 1000 movies. Will be available 30 days after DVD release (Boo!).

Watch on Mac, PC, iPod, iPhone (Hmm, no Apple TV?). Can start watching as soon as 30 seconds after you start download. Must watch within 30 days, and finish within 24 hours after you start. $2.99 for library titles, $3.99 for new titles. Launches today in US. iTunes & iPod software updates coming.

No mention of Apple TV - very disappointing if it's not supported.

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

OK, here's why no Apple TV before - Apple TV Take 2. Rent movies directly (no PC required, can still sync with iTunes though). DVD quality (plus HD, 5.1 audio). Looks just like original Apple TV.

HD rentals!!! 100 titles starting today. $4.99.

Pretty much do everything directly from Apple TV, without messing with a computer. Rent movies, buy music, get video podcasts, get screensavers from .Mac photo galleries, get Flickr photos.

Oh yes, stuff you d/l on Apple TV will sync back to a computer if you wish.

I think Apple TV just stopped being a "hobby".

Yeah!! Free software update for existing Apple TV owners! Thanks, Steve! Software available in 2 weeks.

New prices. $229 for 40 GB model. No mention yet of price for 100 GB model (guess - $299??), New model ships in 2 weeks.

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

Yep AppleTV just got a lot more appealing to me. I just need specifics (i.e. how large is the hard drive (I'd want 160GB to be the small option), does it support 1080p (the old one was 720p), can it use external HDs (the old one couldn't out of the box but had seen them hacked online to allow it).

If yes to most of those, I'm probably in. If yes to all of them I'm definitely in.
----

EDIT - ugh, just read that it's a software update, and the hardware is the same.

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

And here's number 4 - Yup, it's the MacBook Air!!! The World's Thinnest Notebook.

3 lbs. 0.16" to 0.76" thick. 13.3" screen w/ LED backlighting. iSight. Magnetic latch. Macbook-like kb, but with ambient light sensor (does that mean backlit?).

Multi-touch trackpad. Does iPhone-like tricks.

1.8" HD (same as in iPod Classic, I bet). 80 GB standard. 64GB SSD is a "pricy" option.

Intel Core 2 Duo - 1.6 or 1.8 Ghz. Intel shrunk the C2D at Apple's request. "As thick as a nickle, as wide as a dime." Wow!

1 USB port, micro DVI, audio out. Magsafe power. 802.11n & Bluetooth.

No optical drive. $99 external superdrive available. Can "borrow" drive from other Mac or PC.

5 hours battery life.

2 GB RAM standard.

$1799. Pre-order today, ships in 2 weeks.

Pretty impressive machine, but I think I'll stick with my MBP.

Craig - good news if there is new ATV hardware.

On a side note, Macbook Air is official. Ron, get ready to shell out more cash

Well, as an owner of a Macbook Pro with larger screen this isn't
as attractive for me as I would have thought. Except for the
overall thinness and reduced weight, it's a step down.

...but I'm still watching and this thing does look neat!

I would think it's attractive for those busy on the go folks this will be very easy to carry around

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

I hear ya Ron. The hardware is clearly a step down but it has to be in order to be this light and portable.

I'm coming from the opposite end of the spectrum. I too own a MBP, but I also do a lot of writing on the go (either creatively at various places or by lugging it to work at least twice a week). The sheer thinness/lightness of this new laptop is seriously appealing to me. Going from my old laptop (9lbs) to the MBP (5.5lbs) was a huge difference. I anticipate going from the MBP to the Air will yield the same type of difference. Shoot at this point it looks like I could stuff the thing in my large interior jacket pocket!

My Air would only have: Leopard, MS Office 2008, iWork 08, and Moviemagic Screenwriter 6. A really lean and light (physically and software) machine intended to replace a notebook (paper) where I write my ideas on the go. If they keep the price reasonable, I will have to take a serious look at this. Especially the 64GB SSD option...

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

How are they gonna handle 5.1 audio in MP4 encodes I thought MP4 and QT could'nt handle 5.1

He's recapping now... leadup to One More Thing??

Nope. Here comes Randy Newman to perform. Looks like that's it.

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

I too am excited about the new iPhone software, but I will have to wait a day or two to upgrade. I need to finish restoring my iTunes, iCal, etc. after my crash during the Leopard install.

Wow, the MacBook Air is thin! It is a pretty cool piece of technology, but I don't see it fitting my needs. It came in a bit cheaper than I was expecting. I'm sure I'll check it out at the local Apple store when it is released. Hopefully I'll be able to resist the temptation.

QuickTime and the related MPEG-4 file formats are just containers; you can put all sorts of bytes in them. Some of the trailers they have on the Apple site already have 5.1 audio, but it's discrete 5.1 (like in a PC game). For AppleTV, they will have to use a consumer home theater format though -- only one digital audio out.

I just checked the site, and it's "Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through"

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

Ron - no prob. I'm seriously thinking of going to Macworld next year, so maybe I can do it live!!

Some thoughts...

Apple TV - I know a lot of folks wanted a hardware upgrade. Personally, I think 720P is fine for rentals. I suspect there's still bandwidth issues involved, and 1080P films would be much bigger.

Mac Book Air - This looks like one cool machine. I can definitely see it meeting a lot of needs. For me personally, I still need the little extras that my MBP brings to the table.

And am I mistaken, or is this the first Mac in a long time with no firewire port??

iPod Touch updates - Very odd that they're charging for this update. I wonder if this is some kind of tax they're collecting for AT&T? The iPod Touch now really is an iPhone without the GSM circuitry.

Time Capsule - Glad I held off on buying that Airport Extreme. This will meet my needs nicely.

Re: Official MacWorld Keynote Coverage Thread (1-15-08)

The Apple TV is 40GB for $229, with a 160GB step-up for $329.
