Re: Panasonic DMP-BD10AK VS PS3

Pluses and minues:

BD10ak:
Analog outs + or maybe a nothing if you have an HDMI receiver/processor
Decoding of DTS HD(not MA), Dolby True HD and PCM via analog +
Not profile 1.1 or 2.0 compliant - depending if you want to see the latest in special features
IR remote +
doesn't play games or stream music and video - maybe a negative depending on you
Not a game console .. Maybe a + to you.
Quiet - no fan to worry about like the PS3 +

PS3:
Fully upgradable +
No analog outputs - may be a non issue if you have an HDMI receiver/processor.
Fan Noise - may be unnoticeable to you.
Streams music/video/pictures + = some people might care about this. some don't.
No IR remote capabliity(Unless you use a work around like the nyko) -
Plays games + depending on if you care.
Hiccupless playback + Essentially bulletproof playback.
Plays SACDs +

Take your pick. There is not an easy solution. I like the PS3 myself.

I like that this plays back SACDs but not that it has no analog outputs. I suppose it outputs the SACD signal via HDMI?

I'm hoping some future (probably Sony) player has analog outputs and does SACD. There aren't any current ones that do, right?

Re: Panasonic DMP-BD10AK VS PS3

Hmmm... If I understand correctly, not all PS3's will play SACDs. I haven't actually tried it on my PS3/40GB, but I think that version doesn't do SACD.

Also, if you only need stereo output for SACD, I suppose you can get that via one of the optional breakout cables. I don't have too many SACDs myself -- maybe 30 or so(?) -- but most of mine are just stereo recordings anyway. And I also have a separate Denon SD DVD uni-player for that, so haven't bothered to try it on my PS3 -- and I kinda doubt the PS3's stereo analog output would be as good as the Denon anyway.

Marvin, if you want, I guess I can do a quick check for you when I get home. I don't have a HDMI setup though so can't tell you anything about that for SACD playback.

Multichannel yes. If you only use optical, it will do 2 channel. I've tested this.

Correct. Even the ones debuted at CES didn't have it. I think it's something Sony will not support going forward on their hardware. DVD-Audio is also going the way of the dodo bird.

The 40GB removed SACD support, yes.

BD10 will also play DVD-Audio.

I don't believe the PS3 can?
