Re: Porn label Digital Underground goes BR only too

I thought I read a while back that Sony wasn't allowing porn on BD? Although, I don't see why it should matter if they like it or not. Noone needs permission to press media on any other formats (CD, DVD, etc), do they? Sure, Sony has control over what games are allowed on the PS3, but that's the same with all console makers (it's also a major downside for people who want gamesharks, etc for the new systems).

Re: Porn label Digital Underground goes BR only too

I believe it had to do with the production facilities initially being under Sony's control. I'm sure facilities have expanded and they can't all be under Sony's control (though I could be mistaken).

Very few anymore. That's why porn has little to no bearing on the format war.

Yeah. Besides, I prefer the amateur/homemade stuff that you can only find online.

A quick Google search shows 2006 revenue for sales/rentals of video porn to be 3.62 billion.

Now you understand how the old anti-BD rumors have lived to these days.. Even porno is now Blue.

Seriously, pretty good cover design for a porn film.

This news really perks my interest in Blu . In all seriousness though, I doubt this will have much of an impact on the current situation.

That wasn't a rumor. I met with a Sony exec who flew out to meet our company (and took us out to a nice steak dinner! ) to discuss BD plans. When the subject of THRILLER: A CRUEL PICTURE came up (a title we released that has scenes of explicit sexual content) and our desire to release it in high-def he TOLD us outright that Sony was not interested, nor would they allow, anything with explicit sexual content to be pressed at their BD disc facilities.

Guess things have changed. Just pointing this out because I'm getting a little tired of seeing this "no porn on BD" stance Sony definitely had at first, being interpreted as a false "anti-BD rumor".

A friend of mine has that Pirates movie on HD-DVD and said the quality is a serious rival to VHS. Very poor.

Alright, my bad then. I now actually remember your post from somewhere..

But still, is (was?) Sony the only BD facility place then?

The problem with these type of issues is, that people can take a comment like yours and kinda "use it" to spread those anti-BD rumors. "Blu-ray is against porn and HD DVD has that and that means that Blu-ray will eventually lose" is perhaps not the correct way to put it, since we have now porn on both formats.

So you didn´t spread any rumors, but I´m sure that the story changed a bit in the forums.. I remember some threads like that in some forums.

Btw Don. Any new HD-plans?

50 bucks for a porn film is too much. You can probably get it cheaper online.

Re: Porn label Digital Underground goes BR only too

I believe it's Disney that has the issues with porn duplication, not Sony.

Disney will simply not allow their product to be pressed on lines that are also used for porn. Period.

Since many of the key Blu-ray production companies will be pressing huge amounts of discs for Disney, the choice between the income from that, or the relatively tiny amount of income that pressing a few porn titles would bring in is an easy one.

Well, we're chatting about it right now. Now that there seems to be (at least at this moment) a clear winner (that's OUR opinion anyways) we have been discussing it. The problem is that the prices aren't very "indie" friendly... the costs of doing BD are astronomical for a little company like us to jump in without sweating the costs a bit.

Perhaps, soon, the prices will go down and be more favorable to companies that have more limited distribution (like us).

But, right now, we have no plans. But that could change any day if we get a company to do a quality encode and authoring for us at a decent price.

That's not an unreasonable requirement. Though unlikely, if there was a mishap where a porn disc got Disney artwork and packaged in a Disney case, it could get them a big lawsuit. I've heard of DVDs have the wrong artwork stamped on them before, so it could happen.

Re: Porn label Digital Underground goes BR only too

Image Entertainment, which started out putting porno movies out on laserdisc and was actually started by a few people in the porn business, had to stop issuing adult titles when they started distributing Disney. They then created a spin-off company called LaserDisc Entertainment to issue porn.

So, will any of the movie support DBox?

Re: Porn label Digital Underground goes BR only too

Regarding the adult titles... are ANY of them actual, real, honest-to-goshen 1080P??? Or are they just cruddy upconverts to 720P or something?
