Recievers with pass-through HDMI

I have a samsung 4069 lcd (1080p, 120 hz refresh rate), and a sony bdp-s300 Blueray player. I'm building my home theater and have Polk Audio RM6750 speakers. Now I'm looking for a receiver.

I've been eyeing the Onkyo TX-SR505, for the price and name (admittedly), but I'm a little turned off by the pass-through HDMI. But, from what I understand, the recievers that will switch both video and audio from HDMI are pretty expensive and need firmware upgrades occasionally. So, I'm not sure exactly how pass-through will affect me since I live in an apartment, and really won't be turning it up much. Add that I'm NOT an audiophile and this is my first HT.

So I guess my question is: Besides having to add in coax or optical wires, will I notice much of a difference in sound from the sr505 setup compared to a full HDMI setup?

Thanks for the help

Re: Recievers with pass-through HDMI

The Onkyo 605 can be found for around $400 on sale and not only will it handle LPCM over HDMI, it will also decode DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD-MA. I bought mine last July for $399 on sale at Circuit City.

As to your question about noticing the difference in sound? Well, if you never hear it, you won't notice it. Just make sure you never hear it.

Seriously, it is an imrovement in sound. Plus, if you are eyeing receivers specifically for your BDR player, there is no reason to go with a non-HDMI capable receiver. This would put you behind the 8-Ball from the start. Better to save up a few more $$, especially since you are mainly getting it for the Blu-Ray formats.

Re: Recievers with pass-through HDMI

Thanks for the reply, Jeff.

I took your advice and got the 605. I also took my sony blue ray player back and got the 40gb PS3. I figured for the same price, why not have both dvd and games. So, I guess my setup will be:

HDMI out of PS3 and in to onk605.
HDMI out of onk605 and in to TV.

Man, that seems too easy. I hope it goes as smooth in reality as it is on paper.

Edit: Forgot to ask. For a TV with 120 hz refresh rate, do I need a different hdmi cable? Best buy was trying to tell me that I need an hdmi cable that supports 120hz (read: more expensive).

Don't buy an HDMI cable at Best Buy. Order one from Blue Jeans, monoprice or another online vendor. You'll pay 1/10th the price for a cable that is just as good. Cables, especially digital cables, are snake oil. Anyone paying over $25 for an HDMI cable is nuts.

Amen to that. I got my cables at monoprice.... great cables!
