Medium season 4

Last night's season opener for Medium was a strong episode. I was surprised of the status of things at the beginning of the episode. I would have thought things would have been "closer to normal" after Alison's solving the head case at the end of the season finale.

Anyway, it was a strong season opener and started to set up the new routine with Alison working for AmeriTips at the moment. I was glad to see that Devalos is coming back to the area and it will be interested to see how things change as the season progresses. According to the episodes remaining list over at The Futon Critic, we will have 8 episodes if the WGA strike isn't resolved soon.

I really enjoyed it. The Anjelica Huston arc is a nice bonus.

Re: Medium season 4

I found the scene of the finding of the young victim pretty disturbing. This show has always had a strange feel to it, which helps sell the medium concept. The scene in the store attic was shocking and for me was one of the those scenes that is hard to forget.

Re: Medium season 4

Another very entertaining episode, IMO. This show almost never fails to deliver. Did anyone else pick up on the little 'wink' to Hitchcock? The missing girl's name is Melanie Daniels. IIRC, that is the name of the Tippi Hedren character in The Birds.

Also, and this is off the beaten path, but does anyone have any idea why Windows Media Center would stop recording this program mid-way through the episode? The error message tied to the partial recording had something to do with "no copying rights at any time." I have never encountered this before and last week's episode recorded just fine.

Edit - The actual error message reads, "Recording of Medium began as scheduled on 01/14/2008 21:00:02 and was stopped because the recording was of Copy Never content." I cannot for the life of me understand why it would record the first 30 minutes of the program and then abort. Is it possible that this is something new that NBC is doing with the primetime programs it also streams on its Web site or is it more likely that this is a Microsoft Vista bug?? FWIW, I also recorded Terminator on Fox last night without incident.

I also liked last night's episode. Just like they wanted, I was wondering how everything was going to fit together as the episode continued. It all fit into a neater package than I was guessing as it went along.

My OTA recording of last night's show on Vista MC was flawless.

Thanks, Garrett. Must have just been a glitch in the Matrix. As I mentioned, I never encountered an error like this before. My big concern was that the networks had begun to put restrictions on our ability to time-shift some of their programming.

I continue to annoy my wife by referring to the show as "MILFium".

Re: Medium season 4

Another good episode last night. Like Alison, I was completely fooled by the dream, thinking that it was of the past instead of the near future/present. They did a great job there. They also addressed/expressed my question of why things didn't go back to normal after she solved things at the end of the previous season.

I am disappointed that there won't be another new one for 4 weeks. What are they doing the next 3 weeks? Next Monday is the State of the Union address, but after that?

Re: Medium season 4

I enjoyed this episode right up until the ending coda. What the heck was that?? Michael Gross LITERALLY sells his aerospace firm OVERNIGHT after his daughter is rescued (due to Allison's efforts) and it is bought by the same company Joe used to work for before they fired him. I mean... really!

This show always seems to run out of time and feels sometimes like a forced ending is needed as the clock shows 9:57. Last nights close was a good example - I was starting to think it would have to be a two-parter to wrap it all up and then there is a sudden rush into a less than satisfying ending.

Still think it is a great show however and find the story writing mostly fresh and the acting a cut above many other network series.

Re: Medium season 4

I've started watching this show again largely due to the writer's strike forcing competing shows into reruns. I'm cancelling my Tivo season pass for the other show (CSI Miami) and starting one for Medium.

As a crime show it's a refreshing departure from the usual police procedural that relies on high tech gadgetry. It also lacks that "little ghost-watcher on the Prarie" feel of Ghost Whisperer. One can actually care about the characters in this show, they have real problems aside from the "crime of the week."

I particularly like the fact that most of the characters, especially Patricia Arquette in the lead, are not Beautiful People. Arquette is clearly on the plump side and has oddly pointed looking teeth, far from the Barbie Doll wannabes that infeste CSI Miami.

It seems that someone must have been listening to you as we just had a two-parter and it appears that the next story is also a two-parter. Even though it was quite obvious to the audience what was going on in this two-week mystery, there was a load of tension waiting to see if the characters were going to figure it out and whether they could actually prove it. The way they have shaken things up, nothing is certain (like in the episode with Gregory Itzin as Senator Jed Garrity, which ended completed outside of my expectations).

The whole plot with Joe's mother also worked quite well this time.

Re: Medium season 4

Last night's episode was one of the more disturbing episodes we've seen. I was not prepared for what was found out at the end of it. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how it all gets resolved in Part 2 next Monday.

On the other hand, Joe's dreams were pretty hilarious.

Re: Medium season 4

I find myself watching less and less NBC these days because of the endless barrage of reality fare they serve up, and most especially since Friday Night Lights is gone. Medium, though, remains a shining oasis in the otherwise vast wasteland that is the rest of the NBC primetime lineup. It is so well written and executed, that it is an absolute joy to watch.

You're spot on about last night's episode though. It was incredibly intense for a network TV program, and although I must admit that I had begun putting the pieces together before the reveal at the end, it still packed quite a whallop! I greatly enjoy these "two-episode" story arcs and hope they do more of them.

Monday night's conclusion had a few surprises. For some time during the episode I thought they were going to find the evidence needed to bring Wheeler to justice. She was marvelously acted - very, very cold. At some point before the end I knew that Keener was going to take matters into her own hands. That didn't diminish the reveal at the end with all the emotion there.

Next weekend we get to see Arquette vs. Arquette. They have a little featurette about the two of them acting together at Medium TV Show Series on NBC Staring Patricia Arquette as Allison Dubois . NBC Official Site

Re: Medium season 4

That was a shocking ending but I was hoping that some evidence could have been found because I liked the Cynthia Keener/Ameri-Tip story line. Keener could have shown up occasionally with a case but now it loks like Allison is going to have to free-lance. This thing with Joe's invention looks interesting and I hope he does well.

Re: Medium season 4

It was a more sort of typical Medium episode last night. I should have figured out by the device they were using with Rosanna Arquette that the dream was conveying experience via a book. The dream version was really impressively nasty. I really liked Van Dyke's reaction near the end of the episode.

The next episode is supposed to be the beginning of a 4-part arc, though the arc seems to be centering on Joe and not Alison. So, maybe there will be some different Alison related mystery each week.

Re: Medium season 4

Last night was the season finale and I was quite surprised that all of the shakeups leading into the season were quickly resolved.

Alison's job is back and Devalos is back with Van Dyke doing a quick exit before the election.

Joe's idea gets ripped off, but he has a new job and is happy to make $250K in a couple of months. Their money worries are over. I was surprised that just about all his interactions with Megan were just a scheme by Megan to make a quick mega-buck. No wonder she wanted the 51/49 split. She was dishonest the whole time. But still, Joe ended up in much better shape than he started.

The mystery this week was really creepy. I had figured out it was a repressed memory relatively early, but it took some time to figure out that her husband was her half-brother. What a tragedy.

In any case, it was a great end to another wonderful Medium season. I looking forward to when it returns in 2009.
