Yamaha RX-V3800 DTS-HD Master Light

I notice that on Blu-Ray discs played through the Pioneer BDP-95FD the bitstream lights up the DTS-HD Master light, but also indicates 7.1 channels on the front display even though there are only 5.1.

The receiver's GUI shows that the signal info is indeed 5.1 though. Was wondering what is different about DTS-HD Master since none of the other formats fool the front panel display like that.

Edit: Last night I played my first HD disc with DTS-HD Master and the Yamaha lights up 7.1 channels on the front display.

I noticed this with all my Blu-Ray discs as well, so it's not the player. Besides they're just passing the bitstream anyway.

Just wondering if anybody can tell me if this is normal--i.e. an idiosyncrasy of the Yamaha, or is mine defective. The GUI does show 5.1 channels in those situations, but it'd be nice if the front display were accurate to obviate the need to double-check the signal everytime.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Yamaha RX-V3800 DTS-HD Master Light

It's not just you and it's not just the 3800. I have an RX-V1800 that does the exact same thing. And it occurs not only with DTS-HDMA tracks, but DTS-HDHRA tracks as well. It seems all high-def DTS tracks get interpreted as 7.1 by the Yamaha decoder, even if they are only 5.1 or 6.1.

I have written Yamaha about it but have not yet received a response. I have also posted questions on blu-ray.com, but no one there has been able to provide an answer either.

What many people fail to understand is that it's a bigger issue than just the wrong indicator lights being activated. The receiver always interprets DTS-HD tracks as 7.1, and since the rear surrounds share amplification channels with the front presence speakers, the receiver is disabling the front presence speakers for all DTS-HD content. So we are losing not only dedicated ambience (I assume it gets mixed in with the main speakers) but the dialogue lift effect as well!

What response (if any) did you get from Yamaha?

Re: Yamaha RX-V3800 DTS-HD Master Light

James Nelson,

A friend of mine has the RX-V1800 and I dont think the problem you are experiencing is a result of the DTS MA showing 7 speakers. Your issue seems to be related to the fact that yor receiver is 7 channels. You can set your system up with either Front L/R, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R and Center or Front L/R, Presence L/R, Surround L/R and center. It is not possible to connect Front L/R, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Presence L/R and center as that would require 9 channels of amplification. If you engage surround back speakers the receiver will not allow you to engage presence.
You may be able to use another stereo amp connected to the presence pre-outs if you want surround back and presence working simutaneously.

Re: Yamaha RX-V3800 DTS-HD Master Light

Hi Ed Becker,

I was searching the internet for an issue to my Yamaha RX-V3800 receiver's front panel showing 7.1 when playing DTS Master Audio 5.1 and 6.1 soundtracks from my Pioneer BDP-95FD Elite Blu Ray player... and then I came upon your posting in early 2008 regarding the same issue. I've had my Yamaha receiver and Pionner Blu Ray player since March 2008 and have surprisingly just noticed this issue... I'm not sure if this is related to a firmware update I installed on my player in December 2008???

Did you ever get this resolved or is this a glitch from Yamaha (or Pioneer) that we'll have to live with for this receiver?

Did anyone ever hear from Yamaha Customer Support/Technical Assistance and Pioneer Customer Assistance? I just e-mailed both of them last night and hope to hear from them soon... if you don't have an answer already. I'm hoping you have an answer...

From what I have gathered it is a "glitch" in the flag from the disc and Yamaha and DTS don't intend to do anything about it.

If it is a true 7.1 source then DLPIIx will be disabled if you are layering it on 5.1 sources--so if your display is indicating 7.1 channels, but DLPIIx still shows then it's a 5.1 source. You can also verify with the GUI under Signal Info.

The main problem others see in this is if you're using presence speakers and surround backs, because the 7.1 flag will shut presence speakers off. But in this case you could do a workaround and have 2 memorized speaker settings, one for presence and one for surround backs, so you could manually override the situation.

Hope that helps.
