Re: talk about chinese films
Most of my exposure to Chinese cinema (non-action) is through the Independent Film Channel (IFC). Some of the ones I've really enjoyed from there:
*
The Road Home.
Quitting (which I feel is one of the better films about teen addiction).
The Eye (which has been remade at least once). A couple Wong Kar Wei films (
2046,
In The Mood For Love, and
The Chungking Express).
I'm not really a kung fu movie fanatic. I liked
Fearless well enough, but I like the fantasy
wuxia swordfight films like
Hero or
The Emperor And The Assassin (which oddly enough both tell the exact same story).
I had a friend who a real fanatic for the Lucky Stars series of comedies, but I never really got into them. I did like
Shaolin Soccer, but the much acclaimed
Kung-Fu Hustle failed to tickle my funnybone. I think there is a cultural boundary here; in more than a few movies have a humorous scene involving people serving food, or taking food out-of-turn which is completely lost on us Americans. I have not seen Lust/Caution yet, but I have heard it was good and certainly plan on seeing it.
