Re: WILL I NEED 7.1

No...................no such thing (I don't think).
The dvd player just sends out the digital signal, and the receiver does the rest. There may be some that have 7.1 analog outputs, although I've not personally seen any. Even the HD DVD and Blu ray players, that have the analog outputs, only have the 5.1 outputs.

I've heard, that so far, there is only one HD movie, that has 7.1 discreet channels. I don't remember the name of it. Normally, the 7th speaker is matrixed in, from a 5.1/6.1 soundtrack.

No. The receiver will DSP sound for your two rear channels.

Also there are no DVD players with 7.1 analog output. (Or DVDs with 7.1 audio anyway).

Actually your statement isn't entirely true. I know for a fact the Blu-Ray version of Pan's Labyrinth is indeed a 7.1 DVD.

The point is though, 7.1 media is very scarce and you probably shouldn't really worry about it. 5.1 or 6.1 is plenty for any home theater from low end to high end.

Re: WILL I NEED 7.1

No, if you have a receiver with 7.1 sound output all dvd's are 5.1 and some are 6.1 but not many. Either 5.1 or 6.1 sound will be output from the digital optical or coax connections on the dvd player, the extra channels will be extended from 5.1 to 7.1 and this process is done in the receiver.

Currently there are no dvd's with discrete 7.1 soundtracks, there are however HD DVD and Blu-Ray that are starting to get more and more 7.1 mixes. Pan's Labyrinth has a DTS HD Master Audio Lossless 7.1 track and some other movies have 7.1.

Hopefully we will start seeing more and more 7.1 mixes so those of us with the right equipment can start taking advantage of all the speakers.

Re: WILL I NEED 7.1

There are a few HD discs that are ether out or are slated to be released soon with 7.1 audio.

Now Panasonic had a Blu-ray player that had 7.1 analog out puts but that is not really necisary. HDMI can transfer 7.1 audio from a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player to your HDMI receiver.
