New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available... - Page 17

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Thanks for the OT help!

I found the shooting range last night, and my 5-yr daughter was egging me on: shoot him, daddy! shoot that one!! Throw another bomb and shoot them all!!!

Kinda scary....

I am so blown away by the Blu Ray....Blade Runner in DVD format looked like warm sludge compared to the BD version. there is easily as much improvement from DVD to BD as there was from VHS to DVD. Of course, the sound is limited by the optical connection, but it's not bad at all. Later, when I can get approval ( ha ha ) to spend a bit on a new receiver or better yet separates, I'll be in audio heaven. It's almost better to do it bit by bit, because you get the satisfaction of having a "new system" more often!

I fully understand why some folks didn't want a game machine in their pure setup, but it doesn't bother me so much. I think I will get the Blu remote, though!

I am having no luck with getting WMP 11 to serve the PS3. When I check the "share" box then click OK, nothing happens. The OK button goes gray, then comes back, and the dialog box never shuts. I may need an update on Windows.

Ah, the saga continues!

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

I was just about to take the plunge and buy an 80 gig Playstation 3 to start enjoying the power of Blu but just heard the price is dropping to $399 in September. Since I only want it for playing Blu Ray discs and not for gaming (knowing that the revamped console will no longer be BC with Playstation 2), I am going to wait another two months. Kind of a bummer, but $100 saved means more movies to buy.

Regarding Media Sharing on the PS3 with WMP11. Make sure the PS3 is on when you are doing it. In that white box, once you enable sharing, an unknown device should pop in there. You have to manually select it and allow the device to share the media.

The reason the new "80GB PS3" will cost the same as a 40GB PS3 now is because it will be the same machine as a "40GB PS3", except with an 80GB drive. Too bad Sony didn't pick a 120GB etc. drive to prevent marketplace confusion (intended??), they cost less than a 40GB drive did a couple years ago. IOW, the 80GB PS3 available now is a different machine. I doubt anybody who truly needs disc space would buy less than 320GB...Sony made the HD very easy to replace.

So it's not really that the 80GB PS3 is coming down in price; the more accurate thing to say is "they are giving you 40GB more disc space on the cheapest PS3, for the same price", if we base it on what's available now.

Don't the 80 GB and 40 GB machines have other differences, like the number of USB ports?

That's correct though no idea if the new 80GB version will still have that diff. The current 40GB one only has 2 USB ports. Also, I forget now, but doesn't the current 80GB also have an SD card reader, which is missing from the 40GB one?

Anyway, yeah, if you really want more HDD space for downloads and such, you might well end up replacing the drive w/ something bigger anyway. When my 40GB drive got corrupted bad enough to not reformat in the PS3 (but not sure if it's truly dead), I just replaced it cheaply (and very easily) w/ a lower power consuming, cooler running 120GB drive from Western Digital. Probably shoulda just sprung for the 160GB for another $10 or so. Then again, if I ever actually get to the point where 120GB is not enough, I'm guessing 160GB would probably also not be enough either, and I'll just end up replacing the drive again at that point.

As I understand it from E3, the new 80GB PS3 will be the current 40GB model with a 80GB drive, as stated above. That means it will not have PS2 compatibility, no memory reader, 2 USB ports, no SACD playback. Basically, it's a PS3 videogame console and a Blu-ray disc player, two things that the PS3 does very, very well.

For just watching movies, does one need more than 2 USB ports or an SD Card reader?

Nope.

Thanks. I'll wait for the $399 model to come out in September.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

I got lucky and snagged a 60GB PS3 with HDMI cable and 2 sixaxis controllers off of craigslist for $250 (yeah you read it right ). I am going to put it in my main living room and move the 40 GB (upgraded the HDD to 200GB) in my bedroom. I figured for $250 i am getting a damn good 2nd BD player instead of shelling out $300-$400 for a standalone. Gotta love the PS3.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

From what's been announced by Sony so far, the only diffs between the current 40GB PS3 and the NEW "80GB PS3" will be the disc size AND it will come with a DualShock controller instead of the regular SixAxis one.

Why wait? Get the 40GB model now. You'll want more than 80GB fro storage anyway. Replacing an 80GB drive in September will cost the same as replacing a 40GB drive now.

Blu Ray rocks!!!!!

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Nice find Dalton. I've been considering a used 60GB for my home office where I have a flat panel. I will often put TV shows on disk on in there when I dont want to stop working on the PC and don't need a full surround setup. Actually I'd probably convert AMEX rewards to an 80GB MGS pack if they had that one instead of just the 40GB version.

Also, for those who don't follow the PSN videos like a hawk, download at least the first part of their E3 Keynote in 720P, you might be surprised. I've been downloading E3 videos since the dark ages but this was the first one where I felt like I was REALLY THERE, and that's because this one has REAL 5.1 surround! That is, in the games they are demoing on screen you actually get to hear them in full surround!

For those looking to buy a new PS3 (or perhaps one of the new Sony standalones), don't forget Sony still has their ongoing $100 back deal for using a new Sony CC for such a purchase at their own SonyStyle store.

Get $100 card credit

No idea how long Sony will keep this offer going, but it's been around since at least last December, if not longer.

Firmware (v2.42) now available. "This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software."

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Was this another hosed update attempt? My PS3 tried to update last night and got a "failed to download, do you want to try again?" error. Remembering what happened to the people who DL'd 2.40, I decided to say no. I'm not going to update until I hear that people have successfully updated to 2.42 with no problems.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

The original 2.41 update actually caused system issues after being installed. Most likely what you were seeing was an overloaded server due to all the PS3 forum nuts rushing to get it.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Just did the update. No issues. Problems of downloading usually just means that there are too much traffic or some issues with internet-connection. With e.g. Toshiba´s HD DVD-player, I sometimes had to start the firmware update 5-6 times from the beginning.. PS3 has been very smooth and easy compared to that.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

I was unable to update last night (I'm in L.A.) but the update went fine this afternoon. I believe Sony just had some unexpected server problems.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

I got my update yesterday evening...can't tell it made any difference, but I assume it was minor. I think I already had 2.41, since I've only had the PS3 for a week or so and it updated on the first evening of use.

Guys,

Bookmark this site:

PlayStation.com

It takes you right to the update page and has ALL of the items that are included in the update if you scroll down so there's no wondering what was included.

Also, I think I'm the only one who actually copies the update file to a USB "jump" drive and installs it from there using the "Update From Storgae Media" option. Doing it this way, I've never not once had a problem and it's WAY quicker than waiting on the file over Wi-Fi (unless of course you have the cable plugged directly into your PS3).

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Hi, having problems with my PS3 playing BL disk on my new Sanyo PLV-Z2000, the PS3 will not show a good or excellent PQ with the PS3, it will play excellent STD DVD but not the Blue Ray movies.

Read the paragraph below, My PJ will play excellent HD-DVD, I am baffled:

Well finally watched a excellent HD-DVD on my Sanyo projector and watched M.I. 3 the problem is that I watched it with my Toshiba A1 HD-DVD player and it was on 1080i, so it appears that my PS3 is either set up wrong by me or it’s a bad PS3 player, since the Sanyo played an excellent PQ on the Toshiba.

Now any suggestions for those of you who have a PS3 on the set up??? or any other Ideas?

Those who have quiet home theaters need to be wary of endorsements of PS3 as a bluray player. I utterly regret the advice I took from HT mags and websites, because so few mentioned the fan noise, if at all. This is an utter deal-breaker if you listen in a silent environment.

The fans on the PS3 are dynamic, and ramp up to maintain it's temperature. Under normal conditions the fan should remain virtually silent while watching movies. You might want to check to make sure you've proper ventilation and see if you have anything else that's contributing heat to the unit.

Hmmm... I hadn't heard that one before (about dynamic fan control). But if that's the case, then all the more reason to upgrade to one of the (lower power) cooler running hard drives like Western Digital Scorpio series. I can say my PS3 has been very noticeably cooler along the side where the drive sits since I made that swap.

The 40GB one runs much cooler than the 80GB ones...just about every source I've read recommended the 40GB model as a BD player, and specifically not the 80GB ones if fan noise or ventilation could be an issue (besides the fact it does nothing more as a strictly BD player). Also, there are two versions of the 40GB unit, and the newer version (connectors not all on the power switch side) is said to be even quieter.

Sony will replace your unit if the fan noise is too loud, they know about the problem.

I have an "old" 40GB unit, never heard the fan come on above the lowest speed (of 3), which is not much louder than the drive noise of any of my other DVD players.

Guy's I posted this thread a few pages back, would appreciate ANY feedback I am dumbfounded by this problem, every one else has no problem, could my PS3 have a bad program????? ANY suggestions would be appreciated sitting here with the PS3 and no good or excellent PQ as everyone is stating that they get from there PS3.

Updating PS3 via internet is the best and easiest option for many. I have now 5m connection (wireless with PS3 and Wii is also wireless), so it won´t take long...
