Hmmm, it may be, but why not just buy a power convertor -- they aren't too expensive (I just returned from Malaysia where I used my American PC with a power adaptor, no prob) -- and you'll avoid the possibility of burning out your power supply. Are there any stores in Fiji that carry the PS3 that you could doublecheck? It would be heartbreaking to plug it in and blow it out after going to so much trouble to get it.

On the website, from which I posted earlier, some guys used regular PC power cables without running into problems. One fellow used his old printer cable. Several others used a cord designated as an IEC mains or "kettle" cord.

Here is a link if you would like to read comments from others who were experiencing your problem.

You´re really going back and forth with this.. You don´t need any "power convertors" or anything with PS3. You just plug it in. And then you use it. Aight? For the 10th time: I have US PS3. My friend has US PS3. We both live in Europe. We just used the power cable that came with the console. I´m sure that PC power cables and such works just fine.

2.41 is out and so far it hasn't bricked my PS3. Keeping fingers crossed.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

After the last update for the PS3 this past Tuesday (about an hour and a half on my 60 GB) it started freezing up on gameplay - specifically Bad Company, but it was freezing up on others as well.

Anyone else have this issue after the latest update? (2.41?)

I ended up having to reboot, then confirm the prompt to rebuild the hard drive.

All ok here in Fiji!

Universal power, standard power cable.

Just ordered 10 games, and 20 Blu-rays.

More to come.

So glad to hear it, Chris. Looks like Jari had the real info from Finland. (Ya gotta love the web. No more borders, and a worldwide support team of enthusiast/friends.)

I just watched my first Blu-ray disc on the FP tonight, Ratatouille. Aaaahhhhh.... So nice. The uneven quality of the Blu-ray disc they pack with the PS3 had me a little apprehensive, but Ratatouille delivered what I was expecting from Blu.

I'm now SO glad I bought the PS3. Not only is it an incredibly versatile device--videogame, Blu-ray player, media center, web browser--but it gave me something to brag about to my jealous nephews and nieces in Malaysia. Heh heh.

Can I stream mp3 files from my computer into my Home Theater System using the PS3, which is connected to my wireless network?

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Yes you can. All you have to do is turn on media sharing in WMP11. Make sure the PS3 is on and allow the PS3 as a sharing device. You do have to keep WMP open on the PC for it to work.

There are other programs out there that will do it but I dont see the point.

For MP3 only, I'd tend to agree; however, I also stream video from my PC to my PS3 and, for that purpose, TVersity is an excellent solution. By using transcoding, I can stream video files of any format and even support subtitle files (since I tend to watch quite a few non-English language films).

Guess what, I tried to install 2.41 via storage media and now it keeps restarting and saying the hard drive is corrupted and will try to restore. What do I do?

Doesn´t sound good. Perhaps it´s best to call to the "official PS3 help" or something like that first?

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

This 2.4x upgrade has been worrying me. I've held off on updating for a while now. It is working great for me as a Blu player and I haven't had any desire to go to the PS store. I also haven't been playing any games although I'm thinking of picking up NCAA Football this week so I may have to upgrade.

What's their number?

I searched online and all I could find was:

A) Swap the hard drive
B) Take the hard drive out, connect it to a computer, and reformat it (may not work on a Mac)
C) Get a new one.

Advice?

I had to go ahead and say "OK" on restoring the hard drive, which of course erased everything on there (other than game rankings, etc., stored on internet).

This as a result of the upgrade that started causing problems and freezing. I called the support number and they told me to do a reboot ... hold the reset button, turns the power off, wait five seconds, hit it again. But that just led me to having to do the restore hard drive screen.

But at least it runs okay now after the restore. Just lost much.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I must have been lucky because I also installed 2.41 via storage media and have had no problem rebooting.

Sony needs to know that the firmware still has a potential debilitating bug in v.2.41 so they can reissue a safe version.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

After many users had problems with their PS3 after installing 2.40, I now do a full backup before upgrading to the new firmware.

I use an 80gb Maxtor One-Touch portable USB hard drive for backups, it takes approx 30 minutes.

I have also US account, but the store is still "region locked":

"The video store is ip locked to the US, which means that even if you set up a US account in Europe, you're going to be locked out."

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

I figure it's time Sony wants to start making some $$ from the PS3. Got to sell PS3 games for that...people have had enough time to play their PS2 games...time to remove any semblance of hardware backward compatibility. Besides that they're cheaper to make.

40GB of disc space is worth what, $10? You'll want a helluva lot more than 80GB if hi-def video downloads are in your future. The PS3 SACD ability was functional, and may not have been up to the standards of what many SACD owners demand. I don't know, I have so few I rarely play them, titles I wanted and bands I like mostly came out on DVD-A. I wonder if Sony could do the SACDs completely in firmware? I don't know exactly how it's done now, except that it's not the same as on their stand-alone SACD players. I just don't think they're losing a lot of potential PS3 buyers by ditching SACD ability though, probably given up on making much more by selling/licensing SACDs.

I wonder if they're dumping the 80GB MGS4 bundles up here? (Happens a lot with electronics discontinued or soon-to-be in the U.S.) They started showing up again recently, after being very hard to find even on release day. The plain 80GB machines are showing up again too. Aren't marked as refurbs.

I kinda agree (I have the first US 60gb-model with PS2 compatibility, though). If they can sell these PS3s cheaper after removing stuff like PS2 compatibility, I would say that go for it. The truth is, that many people doesn´t really have time nor even need to play PS2-games.. And, they can always keep the old PS2 for the kids etc (I still have both 1 and 2).

Then again, perhaps they could do like Xbox 360 now does. They have 3 different choices and "Elite" has 120gb hardrive and some other minor stuff. Perhaps Sony could also create their own "Elite"-model (with PS2 compatibility, SACD, large harddrive, etc). People always like to choose, when now Sony is kinda making decisions on their behalf..

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

^ Those weren't really my opinions, I was just trying to put myself in Sony's shoes, where they might be coming from with their decisions.

I really haven't a clue about the PS3 actually, since I don't game. I just use it for BD and streaming, and so far it's been flawless. I wish all modern computer/HT gear was as painless and trouble-free to set up and use. Once I get my IR4PS3 set up, then my only quibble with it will be gone.

RE: PS2 compatibility

I have this as an item in my PSN Store, however, because I have an 80GB PS3, it's listed as purchased. Is PS2 compatibility something you can purchase in the store and add to a 40GB PS3? I don't recall anyone ever mentioning this.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Hi,

I have a 1080p screen and a 720p screen in use with the PS3 shared (carry console from one to the other). Buying standalone later.

As with the xbox 360, one can step down the res to 480 with a hard switch at back - how does one do that with the PS3 (when we forget to switch via menu), so that a picture appears?

Isn't the HDMI setting automatic?

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Just a note again, if you're in Canada and want the soon-to-be-old style 80GB PS3: there are lots of the MGS4 bundles in the TO area burbs, and quite a few reported elsewhere too. Actually, they're easier to get now in stores around here than on release day! This will probably be your last chance if you want any of that PS2 compatibility.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

So.....is this an exclusive club, or can any smelly guy join?

Weehaw, I am now a Blu-Ray owner! After reading and rereading everything, I decided I just couldn't wait for the latest standalone players, and that maybe I'd even play a game or two (I'm not a gamer, only got interested in a couple of PC games like DOOM)

So, it only took half an hour to get everything up and running, and 29 minutes of that was figuring out how to get audio delivered by optical cable (non-HDMI rcvr, grrrr. give it a year,m I'll fix that!) I had no idea what I was supposed to do with MGS4, but it was funny to watch and have that controller bouncing around in my hand.

Then I put in a sprkling fresh copy of Blade Runner.

oooohhh, holy carborundum! That is one smooth, beautiful picutre! And, despite not being in the deepest of audio nirvana (stupid optical!!) the sound was great. Tonight I'm actually going to A/B compare my DVD copy with the BD copy just to make myself pleased with forking out ten percent of the value of my theater setup....

So, let's see, what movie is next? drool, drool.

(OT begins)
That´s the best review of the game so far. Seriously, don´t be put off by the slow/slightly confusing start (and try the controls before the actual game in the "virtual range"). Just give it a proper change. You´ll love it. Since it´s using 50gb Blu-ray disc, it´s almost like a movie itself, not just "some game". (OT ends)
