Firmware 2.40 pulled offline due to problems | Talk Playstation.com

Quote:
If your a lucky individual who successfully installed firmware 2.40 with no problems you won’t have any problems to come. There are a number of reports saying that they’ve had problems with firmware 2.4, saying that this firmware upgrade has ‘bricked’ their Playstation 3’s meaning it won’t boot up.
Sony’s Patrick Seybold Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media issued this statement on the Playstation.Blog:

“As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”

The problems are not exclusive to a perticular model, consumers have reported that its been happening on all models. As you can see from this thread on the official Playstation forums, a lot of people have had problems.

It was pulled by Sony because it was bricking some units.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Does this mean you cannot restart the PS3 ?

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Yes it does. However, it usually involves something that cannot be repaired by the end user - Like the firmware itself being hosed on the rom chip.

In the case of this update (2.4), the user can actually fix the problem by reformatting the HD and reinstalling as I have read.

PS3 power supplies are Universal (I believe 100V-240V) and will work worldwide. E.g. I have US PS3 and I live in Europe. No problem.

I don't have my PS3 hooked up to the Internet, so I rely on direct downloads for my firmware upgrades.

The direct download for 2.41 is unavailable.

You mean, that you don´t have Internet at home or..? I mean all it basically takes is to take the ethernet-cable and hook it up. It´s just that easy, believe me. Besides, you probably want to download some demos, trailers and other stuff from the PS3 store at some point..

My PS3 has now wireless connection. Works really well.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Just curious, is there a difference between US and UK firmware upgrades ?

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

There must be. The European machines play R2 SDVDs, the US machines R1.

The proper URL is also in the firmware, so I guess, once you upgrade from a US ISO disc, you will also start to download upgrades from the American site. And vice versa.

I do have internet at home. It's just very far from my HDTV. I am a Mac user and I tried to hook it into the AirPort network that has all the Macs we use at home, but I couldn't.

FYI, just updated my new PS3 80Gb to 2.41 and it seems to be working quite nicely.

I have also Mac (MacBook) and I use Airport Express. PS3 works just fine in wirelessly. Same thing with my friend (also Mac/Airport Express). So Mac+Airport Express should work just fine. You just need to do a couple of adjustments to the PS3 menu (wireless network).

With "scan", you should find your personal wireless connection (SSID) from the list (many has some unique "nickname" that they´ve created).

Then I just added my "security pw" (I believe "WPA key" security code) for the Airport Express, If I recall correctly. Code is for your wireless router. I guess you have to remember the code that you gave your Airport Express when you did set it up..

Some info e.g. here:
PLAYSTATION 3 Help & Support - Network:- Using a Wireless connection

I remember that I got confused with that "WPA key" first. My friend gave me some bad "advices", so I tried to find some series of numbers from my Mac etc - when I should´ve just tried my Airport Express "password" in the first place.. Didn´t have any other issues.

I highly recommend that you try again. PS3 is pretty much meant to work closely with Internet; firmwares updates are coming all the time, PS3 store has loads of stuff (also free) and several games now support online-gaming. Then you´ve your "friends list", now trophies and stuff like that. BD player is also full profile 2.0, so you´ve some web based extras.

If nothing works (it should, I´m sure), you can also buy some longer ethernet cable, and use that when you want to update your firmware, visit the store, etc. At least it´s better than "nothing" (which is unacceptable, if you have Internet at home.. ).

I´m not fully sure what you mean (with this connected to firmwares)?

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but there are so many pages in this thread that I couldn't seem to track down the answer. Other than storage size, are there any differences or advantages between the 40 gig and 80 gig PS3s?

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Depends which generation. Maybe someone who owns one can confirm this for me, but the first gen 80GB PS3s are backwards compatible with PS2 games and will also play SACDs. I can't say for sure on the latest 80GB PS3 that was packed with Metal Gear Solid 4 as a Father's Day promo. Anyone?

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

This is probably a dumb question, but how does your PS3 show up in your "My Network Places" on your XP computer? I don't see anything anywhere, and even when I check it out in media sharing all I see is its MAC address. Everything works fine, and I don't even know what I'd maybe see, but I kind of like to see all the connected devices...just because LOL.

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

I believe that is normal. The PS3 doesn't make itself visible via SMB, so it won't appear in My Network Places. (SMB is Microsoft's protocol for file sharing and workgroup membership.)

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

Jari,

I have the current 40GB US model - ARE YOU SURE IT WON'T BLOW UP? If so, I'll order more for friends here. Power transformers cost $125 here.

Is there a sure-fire way of checking? Tried to open it, but don't have the special screwdriver.

ps. Also a Mac user, and the PS3 is running off the Airport network just fine.

OK. I was reading some postings on a UK/European website. On Dec 24, 2007 a fellow posted that he had plugged a US 40 Gig PS3 into a 240V power supply in Greece. He said the machine worked perfectly well. It appears that the US/Japanese PS3s are using a universal power supply (120/240V). I'm not sure if the EU machines are equipped with universal supplies though. One fellow said he took his UK PS3 with him to the US but that it would not work when plugged in.

A lot of guys in Europe imported 60G models from the States and they reported that the machines could be used on a 240V supply without a step down transformer.

Take the above postings for what they are worth. It does look like the 40G US model has a universal supply; however, if the only way to really be sure would be to open the case. Do you have access to Torx screwdrivers? That is the type of screwdriver required to open the case.

Otherwise, the only way to find out is to plug it in. Hope this helped. Good luck.

I'm including the posting I read. Here it is.

hyperspaced - I have just bought the same bundle from 'best buy' for $399 and have the same concerns regarding the power supply with newer models.

Have you bit the bullet yet and plugged it in?

YEAP !!! I BIT THE BULLET.

OK. US 40GB PS3 (Bundled with SpiderMan) WORKS PERFECTLY ON 240Volts (Greece)

'NOUGH SAID.

Will go looking for screwdriver today. It's not a regular torx. Needs to have a hole in the head.

This is all true. To my knowledge, ALL PS3s have universal power supply (120/240V).

Like I said, I have US PS3 (also my friend has it).

Edit: Note, that the back of the console only shows the power supply in the particular area (e.g. my US model has only "120v/60hz" listed).

Re: New to Blu? Buy a PS3: the most featured BD hardware available...

We opened it, and verified the universal power supply!

About to plug in now. BUt now we don't have a cable adapter! lol. Is it ok to swap out power cable with regular PC power cable for local plug/socket?
