Re: Breaking News!! Warner is soon to be Blu-Ray Exclusive!

| If they come over to the BD side right away, well we all know Sony isn't the most magnanimous of corporate bodies, they may not get a great deal. It will be more like "yes, WB was the nail in the coffin, our format has won and you had to come crawling back to us, you'll take what we give you and like it." Okay, not quite that melodramatic, but you get the picture. If they continue to fight for the short term, Sony will be put in a more desperate situation to try and end the war, and will be more likely to offer to offer incentives to welcome them back into the fold. I want this to end quickly too, but if I were in the boardroom of either Paramount or Universal, this is probably the tactic I'd espouse. I wouldn't do it too long, maybe a couple of months, depending on how quickly the BDA will move to entice you. Hold out too long and you risk really prolonging the war. There will be a point of diminishing returns on this tactic. |
I don't think (hope) that is going on and that they are all trying to negotiate a peaceful end. The proposal above about Toshiba producing a combo player could work. Effectively Toshiba would produce a BR player at BR player prices and give away for free the HD-DVD functionality and Sony could give them a break on the royalties during this phase. HD-DVD exclusive studios could wait until most Blu player owners have Profile 1.1 for their IME content before switching to exclusively BD, maybe by the beginning of 2009. This would allow existing HD-DVD exclusive owners the ability to buy a backup HD-DVD player and new BluRay player for just the cost of a BluRay player.
Or they could steal back a BluRay exclusive studio and let the screaming begin anew.
