Besides what's been said already, if it helps any, go get a Sony Visa Card asap while their $100-back deal (plus 12-month interest free) is still in effect. You can do the instant approval and purchase thing at their Sony Style online store and pick up a PS3/40GB for net cost of ~$300 + tax. I did this (w/ purchase at the local Sony store) just a couple weeks ago myself. It doesn't come w/ a real remote though, so if you need one, it'll cost a little extra. I'm thinking of picking up a cheap, 3rd party USB-to-IR remote off Amazon myself as a bridge to my universal remote.

Our HD DVD players won't suddenly stop working just because Blu-ray has apparently "won". I fully intend to enjoy my HD DVDs and the upconverting capabilites of my XA2 till it breaks down. Then, I'll start crying.

Yeah just business. I agree. Guess I'll just start seeing them that way. And leave more of their product on the store shelves, which I used to buy cause I admired their commitment to good quality for the consumer. A sign they cared for the consumer. To me they let down a big portion of their consumers in a very big way that is hard to forgive. They don't care.

I hope so. Even though I just bought a Toshiba HD-A3 a few weeks ago (first player for either format), I didn't care which side won, as long as it ended soon. I'll still be able to play my existing HD discs and have a great upconverting player. It does suck to probably be on the losing side, but it's a small price to pay for one format.

Doug, I agree. I even stated that. If Warner had gone HD only instead of Paramount, I'd have picked HD to win then. Warner just has too much major stuff, both catalog and recent. They are easily #1 in terms of content. But I'd argue Fox and Disney might be #2 and #3

I do feel bad for the HD only folks. But this is no more a betrayal than when Paramount went HD only. It's a business decision, and it's a BIG one. Glad I got HP1-5 and Blade Runner on Blu for Christmas.

I'm format neutral, but we all have our preferences, don't we? I was very much hoping for a region-free world, and I was expecting HD DVD to do that for us.

I must admit I'm disapointed with the WB announcement. HD-DVD cannot survive this.

I bought an A3 for $149 w/ 10 free HD-DVDs back in November.

Fortunately I've only bought 7 additional titles on top of that, and I only averaged $17.00 per title. So I'm only out about $270. The movies I did buy I can still watch, and I'll still have a great upconverting player. Still it's a little frustrating.

I'm done with HDM in the near future. Blu-ray players will have to drop below $200 and most likely below $150 before I jump in again. It's not so much the money, but the whole thing has just left a sour taste in my mouth.

Congrats Blu-ray. RIP HD-DVD.

I can understand one being happy about Warner's decision. I sure would be if I owned a Blu-ray player or was neutral. But to say it was good timing? How is it good timing? Good timing would have been BEFORE the Christmas shopping season when many people bought into HD-DVD due to the dropping player prices.

Even if Warner had gone HD-DVD exclusive, I would never say that days after Christmas was 'good timing'.

Yep. I'm going to be pretty annoyed at having to buy a new player come May if I want the advanced features on Warner discs. I've been format-neutral for the past year but favoring HD-DVD because I like the region-free discs, less DRM, combos, and players being fully functional since day one.

Oh and its not the same as Paramount. Why? Cause Warner prolonged it, announcing much later. Plus they own a bigger market share. Plus they have released way more titles than Paramount before announcing this change.

That's definitely the best way to look at it. And when the inevitable re-release of most the titles you have on HD DVD come out on Blu Ray, you can pick those ones up if you want to replace them with a BR.

Honestly, Bill is the sole casualty of this format war, aside from a lot of early adopter money. I prefer Blu myself, and have for a while, but I will probably see him as a fanboy for a while to come even with the war over. He really hurt his credibility over the last year, when events like this show he never even had to.

I don't understand the mindset of "Back to SD". If you've got the money, there is absolutely no reason to jump into Blu. The HD-DVDs I own will be enjoyed for many years to come, and it was my first HD format, but to go back to SD would be ludicrous unless it was financially motivated.

Fox has a very nice library, but their support for blu-ray has been iffy at best. Disney also has a nice library, but it is pretty limited to family films particularly when you get back before the creation of Touchstone.

But what would you have them do? Stay neutral regardless of what it might mean to the chances of success for a HD format? Yeah, I know some folks feel both formats could've continued to compete and succeed, but I'm very skeptical of that belief myself.

If your only beef is w/ the exact timing of their decision and announcement, then we're really just quibbling over small, virtually insignificant details in the grand scheme of things IMHO.

Don't you mean Blu Friday?

Let's hope that this brings Criterion into the HD fold ASAP.

My A2 will never be a doorstop -- the $98 split over the cost of all my HD discs is only a few extra bucks per disc, and it'll make a nice upconverting player someday once I get an HD set for the bedroom.

I'm not sure they are going to come down much more than $19.95 for most discs. That's what I've been paying anyway, for all but Fox titles.

Interesting, like some here, I just bought into HD-DVD because of Star Trek, but with a neutral format mentality. So perhaps I wait a while longer as there may be deals for Blu Ray players in the coming months. Luckily, I too have very few HD-DVD titles, 'cept an expensive Star Trek TOS Season One and Blade Runner briefcase sets.

I just wonder now what Paramount's response will be, meaning, how they will handle the other two season sets of Star Trek TOS and the Trek films. Perhaps they continue with HD-DVD as they have their exclusivity contract that is what, one year and a half?

Studios don't have to use the region coding. Warner has yet to bother with it on Blu-ray, and I highly doubt they ever will.

Well, isn't this something? One day before CES. This must be a huge bummer for the hd-dvd group, I think the end of the format war is very near! Unfortunately for Paramount they are stuck by contract for a full year.

I have said in my other posts that I believe Warner as well as the other studios wants this format war to end quickly or else there may be no chance for mass-adoption of either format. This decision will effectively make that happen much faster for had Warner gone hd-dvd, we would have a lingering war.

I have been searching madly for a Samsung bd-up5000 combi player, a few of which have been released to market. I have not been able to find one, and so I think I will stop looking and spend that 700.00 on a really good stand-alone with all the perks and move my ps3 to my other hd-equipped room.

I don't think that those who purchased a hd-dvd player were ripped off. They still have a player for their movies and an upconverting player and will continue, for a time, to get new product, I just feel bad for those who can't afford to buy player after player who may have saved up only to buy a format that now looks to be in deep trouble.

I know this is the wrong place for this but I'll ask anyway. Does anyone know if the new Samsung dual format player will piller box 4x3 SD DVDs when up converting them to 1080p? My BD-P1000 doesn't. If the new one does I think that will be the player for me.

Who says Paramount is stuck. I don't think anyone has any information that would indicate that Paramount HAS to be exclusive for a particular period of time. The only thing the 18 months referred to was the period of time that Toshiba would promote Paramount films. Paramount may very well be able to walk away from that at any time.

Well, if Paramount was paid a boatload of money then I would guess that they would have a specific time that they are supposed to honor their end of the deal
