Mostly because it is argubly the best Blu-ray player out there. If/when it gets DTS HD MA decoding, it will be perfect.

Not when I was spoiled by $7 titles and I have a backlog of over 40 HD movies from prior BOGO sales to watch, combined with the fact that I think there will be future special additions since the BD didn't ahve teh unrated directors cut. There was more to it than me being a total cheap bastard . Of course I could still change my mind.

Well, it doesn't sound like that in the press release. Perhaps Warner should be more honest in their press releases? If not, why even release it with some of those statements. I am just frustrated because Warner has been my favorite company and I admired their continued stance on neutrality and then just like that they turn. It's a betrayal. So was Paramount a betrayal but I guess I had a soft spot for Warner since I love so many of their catalog titles.

If this makes anyone think about going Blu I second the PS3 or the new Panasonic. Stay far away from the heavily discounted stand alones.

IMHO anyone with HD DVD who feels betrayed is IMHO not being responsible for their own actions. It's like blaming the lending instituations for a bad mortgage. You signed the papers, you accept the responsibility.

Whiners will whine but they need to grow up. When you jump into a format war, you take your risks and you accept your licks if you choose wrong.

I couldn't agree with you more. I jumped into this format war by being format neutral from the beginning, in June of 2006. I have no regrets and will continue to enjoy my HD DVD collection for many years to come and will just shift my HDM purchases to mainly BRD.

PR stands for both press release and public relations. Paramount didn't mention it and I didn't expect WB to annouce the details either. Lets just say I offered to switch from supporting both to going BD only for a lot less (college fund for the kids, nothing personal), but Sony wouldn't even return my calls.... (that is an angry face, not a constipated one).

I think there was a wink in David's comment.

Also interesting that American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu announced yesterday that Apple will be refreshing its Mac Pro line to include Blu-ray. Looks like the pins are falling down, one by one...

Love the optimism. Wish I could share it. Both sides will fight to the death. Since I'm format neutral, I don't look at as "Hooray for our side!", but more as "Hooray for a side, let the scales tip more towards it". Not for blu-ray, but just for a side to win and the risk of these becoming niche formats decreases.

Good for Warner to start doing this after they stop half-assing blu-ray titles. (Superman Returns with Dolby digital and the HD-DVD has TrueHD)

Well statistically, Blu-ray was outselling HD-DVD. Warner wasn't
exactly being dishonest. However, don't think for a minute that it
was sheer consumer demand that drove their decision. Press
Releases are a neat way of putting a positive spin on any news event
with limited information.

If Jack Nicholson were here right now he would say, You want the
truth?! You can't handle the truth!

I am sure when the smoke clears things will become more evident.
This was not a clear cut victory for Blu-ray as far as I am concerned.

At least we can now move forward with one format and hopefully turn
the masses away from sDVD and towards Blu-ray.

WOOOHOOOOO!!

I'm fully anticipating having to double-dip Batman Begins and The Matrix Trilogy for better encodes, but aside from that small caveat, I am a happy, happy man.
Of course if Universal makes lossless audio mandatory when they jump, I will throw a fit about all the titles I will want to replace, but that's my own fault.


There is still no way I am going to have the patience to wait for Zodiac and Into The Wild, though, unless there are some major surprise announcements at CES.
Any other two movies, sure, but the two best movies of 2007 is too much to resist.

I also think this is the big announcement of the entire war. WB's catalog is the elephant in the room. I bought HD and Blu, and while I loved HD (and disliked the smarminess and false moral high horse man Blu supporters espoused), I really didn't care what happened in the long run.

But this is it. Paramount and Universal cannot compete with Fox, Disney, and Warner Brothers.

As a supporter of HD media, this is good for the general public. I feel bad for HD, as I think they got screwed, but it was a screwing they contributed to. Guess there is no need to look for dual format players anymore.

I double dip for Batman Begins, King Kong, and The Matrix Trilogy as well.

Adam, could you tell me the model number of the new Panasonic player? Thanks. I've only looked at a Sony Blu-ray that was in my Dell catalog over the holidays.

And if Warner is reading this, let's bring an SE of Contact to high definition, please.

Now that I think about it, I hope Amazon still has that Blu-ray sale on Lost S3.

Well, hope to pick up some deals on HD DVDs when they get on the clearance lists... I still want to find the HD DVDs with the nifty IME feature that I haven't picked up yet, but now for cheap. Anyone got a quick handy list of those HD DVD with IME?

What do we mean by "over"? What's the studio support now for the two formats? Are there BR players coming out now from manufacturers that previously only made HD-DVD players?

The Panasonic unit is the DMP-BD30 which I have and it's the best BR player for me on the market.

Oh contrair, my friend. My hope is that this causes the Samsung combo player's price to dip significantly. Hopefully this will lead to rampant cheap used first and second gen LG combo players too. Even if the opposite happens, standalones like the XA2 and A35 will soon be dirt cheap, and I will gladly pick the bones of the format to score a cheap 1080p capable player for my HD catalog.

It's not a betrayal, its a business deal. Nothing more. It's not personal, it's just business.

You have at least 75% of the video market exclusive to BR. It's only a matter of time now. Also, I expect some major announcements next week from Denon and some other hardware companies with BR players.

Forget Fox and Disney. Warner is the 800 pound gorilla when it comes to film libraries. And they have almost, not quite, but almost been single handedly propping up both formats.
