Breaking News!! Warner is soon to be Blu-Ray Exclusive! - Page 6

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

I do not think anyone who is an avid fan of Hometheater is happy about this I will accept it and move on but that does not make me happy about it. Sony has a bigger pocket than Toshiba and if anything this just proves that Microsoft is not as involved as previous rumors have stated as they probably could have out bid Sony but that is assuming this was only about money. Which I am not sure of and as stated above may never know.

Hopefully this starts to put an end to the Fanboy mentality in a lot of the forums across the web, after the gloating stops anyways.

Later Everyone

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

I've had both formats since the beginning but I'm glad about this. It seems the war will come to an end very soon so that's a good thing at least. I have more BD's than hd dvd as well but as others stated I'll still be picking up Zodiac and Into The Wild on hd dvd as I cannot wait for those. Congrats BluRay, you really pulled it off after an abysmal start!

Since we are throwing around cheesy quotes I'll add

'with great power comes great responsibility'.

I can only hope that Warner did the right thing for the right reasons, but from what I'm hearing in some vague responses here, I doubt it.

How about...

Reality: "It's over Johnny..."

HD DVD: "Nothing is over!"

I'm an avid fan of Home Theater and I'm quite happy to see this format war finally moving towards an end. I own both formats and frankly wanted A format to win. In the end I would have settled for either. The fact that this announcement will more than likely realize that single format future equals me being ecstatic for HDM in general.

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

I feel bad for Toshiba as I think they put out a very competent product with a superior performance/price ratio that was well in the consumers favor- yet they ultimately weren't rewarded for it.

On the other hand, the last several months I've been becoming more and more disenchanted with the slopiness and thoughtlessness I've been seeing on the HD DVD side.
From poor QC to poorly thought out ergonomics that start with IMEs and U-Controls and extend to packaging that is all about form over function- along with the continued mis-use and implementation of the Combo feature...something that could have given the format a serious leg-up, but was instead primarily used to gouge the consumer out of a few more bucks.

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

I was hoping that at some point during CES we would hear news about possible shifts in support for HDM support by the studios, but I didn't expect to hear it today. Just yesterday, I was thinking that I would be more excited about Universal or Paramount going neutral than I would Warner going Blu, since it would mean more BD titles, but when I saw the news, I found I was extremely happy about it.
First, it really is starting to look like BD has won the format war, but then again we could be reading tomorrow about Fox or Disney going neutral or red, so I wouldn't say it's totally over, just mostly!
Second, as a PS3 owner, it seems that I picked the right format

That said, if Warner had gone the other way, and we were reading today about Warner being HD only, I'd be dissapointed, but I probably would have gone to Amazon and placed an order for the A-30... I was actually about to pull the trigger on one anyway, so I could watch some of the Universal and Paramount films out and upcoming that I really would rather see in high def. I'll probably hold off now, just to see if we hear anything during the next week or so from Universal or Paramount. At this point I still don't think $200 is too steep to go neutral, even if it is with a format that looks like it's at death's door.

I am sure when the smoke clears things will become more evident.
This was not a clear cut victory for Blu-ray as far as I am concerned.

At least we can now move forward with one format and hopefully turn
the masses away from sDVD and towards Blu-ray.

wow i am watching this movie right now as i was reading through this topic and came across ron's quote, neat.

anyway, i was surprised when i got home and saw the bulletin in my email
from VB mag.

i stopped reading at ron's post so if this was mentioned before...
could the new firmwere released a few weeks ago for the pip on br players
be a part of the desicion?

Still no reason not to enjoy what HDDVD titles are currently out and those still to come.
It's all about the movies!
Enjoy!

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

The HD player market isn't that large right now: I'd be very surprised if the relative numbers of currently installed BR and HD-DVD players counted all that much.

Paramount didn't look at it that way, and I'm not sure Warner would have seen it as particularly conclusive either.

So it was certainly a bidding war, not a decision on the merits of either format.

All I need now is Brazil on Blu-Ray and it will have been worth how ever many million were paid ... :-)

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

Damn dudes.

Seriously, I feel bummed.

The biggest reason I wanted HD-DVD to come through in the end, was so that I dont' have to buy new hard ware.

I'm probably going to just not buy anythign Hi-Def for a while.

Funny thing is, my friend just bought me a turn table so I think my hobby will by building a RECORD COLLECTION!!!!

Efffff hi definition, i'm going back to Vinyl.

I am serious though. I'm a gamer, so buying a PS3 wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Luckily I have a $100 in a best buy gift card I could burn, but damn, $300 ouch.

Like I said. I'm going into vinyl.

You know what the sweetest thing about Vinyl is? All sorts of new bands release on vinyl still all of time. You might be surprised at the market for new vinyl, I'm talking about the crazy bands you guys haven't heard of that I like. You know, the kinds of bands with high pitched screaming and really proggy guitar and drums.

Yumm.......

Wow I think i'm experiencing post tramatic stress syndrome.

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

I am not completely happy about it mainly because if it were not for this format competition then the prices would have remained very high and BR would have never updated their specs to compete with the already final specs of HD-DVD. I just hope prices for Media and Drives, players will continue to drop (Fox should take notice as they are over priced compared to all the other studios).

Home Theater is about bringing the movie going experience home and in my opinion both of these formats did that very well. Competition brings out the best and the worst. I will not miss the worst but will miss the best.

No matter what BR backers may say if not for HD-DVD, BR would have been just a DVD with better picture and sound. HD-DVD came out with a completed spec and it took Sony a year and a half to more or less catch up with it.

I will enjoy both formats for sometime and hope everyone else will enjoy their format of choice.

Later Everyone.

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

I was having this discussion with people here when Paramount made their HD-DVD announcement ... that it would trigger Sony to pursue Warner Bros.

And lo and behold, a few months later it's official.

I think in general though the Hollywood studios are breathing a sigh of relief now. Things have become much less confusing and now they know which format to bank on.

And for retailers, as well, they probably are very happy to see the beginnings of the end of this format war.

I couldn't pull the trigger on the BOGO Die Hard Movies at Amazon ($27.99) too expensive.
That's exactly the BDs I bought in the Amazon BOGO deal a few hours ago - and The Usual Suspects. For the price of two.
(Ho, ho, just checked my e-mail, they have even been sent off to me already!)

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

If I may....

I have actually preferred, thus far, my HD to the BD player. And before the last nail is put in HD's coffin...

Back in the 80's there was a lesser known format war between LaserDisc and RCA's CED disc player. Fox went 110% behind CED, even releasing titles on CED before ANY other format..VHS/Beta/Laser, with a price point, retail, of $19.95.

Laser won that one..DVD beat laser. So...who really knows at this point.
I am looking at the wall...can't quite make out the writing.

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

An interesting announcement to be sure.

But as somebody still (thankfully!) sitting on the sidelines (I knew it made sense!) I feel no more compelled to buy into HDM tonight than I did last night. I won't buy into any HD format until every major studio is backing it. Simple as that.

Only when I can buy - or realistically potentially buy - Die Hard, Star Wars, Star Trek, Jaws, Back To The Future, Indiana Jones, Batman, Superman, Alien, Shrek and Lord Of The Rings on the same format will I be willing to jump.

The chances of that happening have greatly improved with tonight's announcement, but I still don't see it reallistically happening for at least 12-18 months if Paramount (and Dreamworks?) are tied to their contract - and god knows what Universal has gotten themselves tied into.

So well done to Warner. And well done to Blu-Ray. It looks like if any HD format is going to take off then BD will be it - if they ever get the thing finalised! But, again speaking as one of the MANY watching and waiting, it ain't over yet.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

As a PS3 owner, I'm simply relieved that it looks like the deciding ballot was cast. To be honest, I'd be a little disappointed had it been for HD-DVD, but the biggest disappointment would have been no decision.

I hate this format war more than anything. I have enough disposable income to make a switch to HD-DVD. I just hated not knowing, and the stagnating effect that this war has had on HD media acceptance.

I'm 90% glad that WB made "a decision". The remaining 10% is happy that it was BD, but I'd still have been happy if it was HD-DVD [in comparison to this war dragging out].

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

I think it's pretty much over imho.

If none of the BD studios budge at CES (which I doubt), then it's only a matter of time before Paramount/Universal publish in BD.

I had been planning on purchasing the Sammy uni player, and right now, this is the only way for members to go who want to continue enjoying their HD-DVD discs. Uni & Paramount may remain stubborn for sometime, but we'll just have to wait and see how they respond.

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

1) I have also preferred my HD player to my Blu player, and cannot tell you the difference between the resulting PQ/AQ between them.

2) I agree there has been (and will absolutely continue to be) hypocrisy and dishonesty from the format fanboys. I've made it clear that I detest BD fanboys, because I felt they had been more dishonest and partisan. Especially after the Paramount announcement. I thought I was going to go back in time with all the spin this war has seen. And partisan dishonesty/hypocrisy is my BBIGGEST pet peeve. To quote one of my favorite books: Truth is an immortal goddess. If you have to be disingenuous to make a point, then you aren't worth the debate

3) I'll defer to HTF management on Bill Hunt. But I haven't been to TDB since the Paramount announcement (since going there from 1997 on for news)...and I'm never going back. See above for reasoning.

4) I will buy an HD exclusive only if I am willing to double dip (like I am for Zodiac). It's a bitch, but I love movies. Not formats It's why I went neutral in the first place.

5) I agree with most of what Paul Scott has said. There will be some eye-opening stats next year, and we may learn that HDM is going niche, as I have long predicted. iTunes structure of content is the future, IMO. Maybe I'll be wrong.

6) I'll be buying a dedicated BD player (instead of using my PS3) this year, and keeping my Toshiba HD player.

Ooooh! I didn't realize WB's IME forces that on you. I sure hope that's not the future of IME on BD.

Why?
Because I dislike the combo format, and even more (much more actually) I hate having many of the bonus features compiled and put into an IME. I HATE IMEs!
An IME is like going to the movies and then having the guy in the seat next to you nudge you every ten minutes to show you a page from the 'Making of...' book he brought along with him.
When these formats first came on line, I thought "hey, that looks like a cool feature" but the more i see it now the more I dislike it. When I want to watch the movie, I want to watch the movie with no distractions. When I'm done with the movie and want to explore BTS and production material, then I don't want to have to spool thru the entire movie again to get it. An IME flies in the face of one of the major original selling factors of the entire optical disc format- random access.

I bought Harry Potter ATOOTP on Bd because the features are seperate and easily accessible. In this sense, profile 1.1 and 2.0 aren't doing me a damn bit of good.

Toshiba 'Surprised' By Warner Blu-ray Announcement

Sorry, but with the Paramounted deal in the rear view mirror of history I find this pretty damn hilarious.

Re: BREAKING NEWS!! Warner Brothers is now Blu-ray Exclusive

The Paramount announcement was Pearl Harbor.

This is Hiroshima. I hate using historical/war analogies but this one just seems to fit too well. Even though the "war" will linger on for a bit longer, effectively HD-DVD is done for.

I'll take that number in good faith, Jason, but I'd rather have 100%. With my luck, the titles that I'd want to import, the niche titles, would fall into the unhappy 32%.

For now, also having an HD DVD player, I can pick up the extended version of RESIDENT EVIL from Japan, or the extended version of CRANK from Germany (see what I mean by "niche"). Not too sure about these versions becoming available on Blu at the moment.

Now if the forthcoming Samsung BD5000 combo player was also a multi-region DVD player with PAL to NTSC capabilities, I could get rid of a lot of hardware!

Well, this is disappointing, but life goes on.

So, now I have a serious question for those with a bit more of a feel for the Blu-Ray pulse, and I guess this is as good a place as any to ask: If I'm looking to get a 2.0 BD player for around 250 bucks, how long do you think I'm going to have to wait?
