I hope this topic falls within the scope of this forum section. I am currently upgrading my HT audio and now have the following new items about to be deployed:
2 - NHT ST4 towers with passive side firing 8" subs in tower base
2 - NHT A-1 200 wpc monoblock subwoofer amps
1 - NHT X-2 Active crossover for use with above
Already in place:
1 - Atlantic Technology 125 wpc T70 powered 10" subwoofer
2 - Boston Acoustics VRS Micro dipole surrounds for sides
2 - NHT Super Zero XU for rear centers
1 - NHT M5 to be deployed horizontally to replace my Super Center
AV receiver is HK AV 325 - rated at 50 wpc x 7 channels
Have now studied the user manuals for all, believe I have a handle on preferred wiring arrangements and have just a few questions.
The ST4's are ready to bi-amp as they have a strap connecting the separate binding posts for the subs and the upper two way assembly. And the X-2 can take care of the appropriate cross-over between high and low and also help me account for room acoustics by virtue of adjustable gain etc.
1) Considering the fact that I'm relieving the HK of the need to drive the 8" passive subs will I have adequate power to sufficiently drive the remaining speakers? The room is 9.5 feet wide, 18 feet long and has 8 foot ceilings. I think the efficiency of all the NHTs is low - about 86 db.
2) Is there any benefit to leaving the 10" AT70 powered sub in place? The X-2 crossover has jacks for both LFE In and LFE Thru. I have an LFE preamp out on the HK. The diagram in the X-2 documentation only shows use of the LFE In - which would direct all the LFE signals to the 8" subs that only go down to 31 hz or so. They reference a possible use for the LFE Thru as follows:
"The level of the signal on the LFE channel varies considerably from source to source, so you may need to adjust the LFE control on the X2 depending on the source material.
There is an LFE "Thru" output on the back of the X2. For more information concerning the use of this output, visit our website, www.nhthifi.com/technicalhelp/evolution ."
The X-2 has a gain control for LFE which, I assume, allows one to adjust the LFE level so that overall performance of the 8" subs is most accurately defined. But shouldn't there be benefit to leaving my T70 in place and passing all the LFE signaling directly through to it?
The above referenced link from the NHT user manual is a dead link and I can't find any information about the LFE Thru on their web site.
P.S. I have called NHT repeatedly at both their toll free and regular numbers during their stated business hours on both their 'support" and their regualr office numbers. Both of them ring through to the voicemail of one woman who is not at her desk.
