Re: Panny DMP-BD30K upscaling ability?

So, how is the Panasonic DMPBD30K player? I'm considering this one and would really like some input.

What is its profile? 1.1? Are there firmware updates?

Would you recommend this over the Sony BDP-S300?

Any opinions would be appreciated!

Re: Panny DMP-BD30K upscaling ability?

I am going to be replacing my Sony BDP-S300 with a Panasonic DMPBD30K player. The BDP-S300 does a good job for the money but does not bitstream Dolby True HD or DTS-MA. It also does not internally decode DTS-MA ether. I want the Panasonic so I can bitsteam the Dolby True HD and DTS-MA to my next receiver.

So IMHO the Panasonic would be the better choice. I have seen the Panasonic DMPBD30K hooked up to the 103" Panasonic display. That was just before the super bowl here in Phoenix and Panasonic had there display trailer at my local Fry's. And the Panasonic DMPBD30K looked great on that 103" display.

Now I have no idea if there are any updates currently but I feel the player is worth buying.

Re: Panny DMP-BD30K upscaling ability?

Dunno whether the following qualifies as an upscaling issue or a deinterlacing issue, but--on the SD DVD single-disc version of Star Wars Ep.4, after the prologue scrolls off the screen, the scene pans down and some planets are shown. Watch the first (small) planet as it scrolls upward--it does not scroll smoothly...it skips, almost kinda looks like as if a few frames are being dropped. In comparison, the planet doesn't exhibit this issue when I play it back on my Toshiba XA2 player...

Note--it is not possible to (indirectly) "turn off" upscaling/deinterlacing on the BD30 when viewing SD DVD since there is no setting in the BD30 setup menu that allows you to output at 480i when using HDMI; this may be of interesting note for those of you who prefer to let something else downstream perform the upscaling/deinterlacing.
